Working

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, Getting Organised, House Purchase, House Work, Work-related

Before anyone asks, yes, I ddi feel somewhat guilty about working while all the moving stuff was going on. However, it had been agreed between Herself and I that this was the best way to do it. There’s a few good reasons, but the main one is always the best. Money.

Because I’m a contractor, I don’t really get sick pay, or time off pay. Not going in to work costs me/us money – and it’s a fair amount on a daily rate. While we’re not on the breadline- far from it- nor are we so rich that we can say ‘oh, sod it, a couple of days off, doesn’t matter’.

Equally, well, most of the work was being done by other people. We’d got a removals company doing all that side of things, loading up their truck/lorry/whatever and so on. We’d already packed just about everything – the PC etc. got done on Thursday night- so it was a matter of taking the bed and desk apart, and all the rest got done by the removals people. Herself had her family helping too, which was another great bonus, and meant that things ran smoothly.

Oh yeah, and it also means I was up at 6am, working from 8-4 so that I could then get home and carry on doing work on getting stuff set up and so on once it’d been moved in to the house. Equally, with the way the house will be worked on, we’d only really got four rooms to get sorted out initially (living room, bedroom, office, and kitchen) – most of the rest of our combined stuff is going to be put in storage in the garage at first, and will be gradually migrated as we sort the place out.

So while it may sound like chaos (and probably is chaos) there’s method in our madness. And I’m sure I’ll be made to make up for it over the weekend. (Particularly if the fucking phone and broadband aren’t sorted out)

Maybe. Maybe Not.

One aspect of the move that may or may not work out at the moment is all the stuff around internet access, phone lines and the like.

While I’ve organised the move with BT (and written about it before) I noticed last night that the electrician who’s been working on the place has taken out the master phone socket, and not replaced it. And because the place already has/had a phone line etc., I have a nagging feeling that BT aren’t going to be sending anyone out to actually do any work in the house. This combination makes me worry about things, as you can imagine.

If we’re lucky, (we were last time) the guy who will be installing the Sky/Sky+ at the new place today will be able to connect a phone socket to the existing wires, and all will be well, so that when I get back from work, I can connect in the phones and ADSL Modem, and everything will Just Work™.

Alternatively, well, I won’t be adding to D4D™ for a couple of days. I’ll only know at about six pm tonight, by which time well, if it’s not working, it won’t be working all weekend.

Well Timed

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, Getting Organised, House Work, Work-related

Yesterday, in the time we’re doing all the packing up and sorting out of the current house before moving today, Herself had an interview in Cambridge. The letter informing her of the interview date only came through on Monday, so hile it’s all gone OK, it’s all been on very short notice, and on one of our busiest weeks.

In the end, I drove us both into Cambridge yesterday morning at some ungodly hour, was in my office just after the building opened, and then Herself went to the interview, then the presentation she needed to make a couple of hours later. And as timing worked out, she finished, and came to meet me in Cambridge just as I was finishing work, so a quick(ish) drive back to home, and then on with the preparations.

Fortunately, we’ve had help from the in-laws, which had all been planned out way before news of the interview and so on came through. They arrived on Wednesday night, and got one hell of a lot done around the two houses yesterday.

Things are just about ready for us now to move in. Well, when I say ‘ready’ I mean “we’ve done one hell of a lot, and it’s infinitely better than it was, but we’ve still got a long way to go…”. Then again, through the bank holiday weekend, we’ll get a lot more done.

It’s going to be good, getting in to the new place at last. The last couple of weeks have been a nightmare, getting people organised to come in, forgetting to work on Norfolk Time (sorry, Toime) where ‘yes we’ll definitely be done by the 25th’ translates into ‘or maybe we’ll actually do the work on the 26th’. In some ways I’m amazed that D4D™ hasn’t contained more rants about tosspot tradesmen this week, but there we go, them’s the breaks. I’ll probably vent all that stuff once everything’s done.

And just to top things off this week, Herself’s car has to go in the garage today. We discovered yesterday that one of the door locks has completely jammed= so badly that the garage can’t even get it to lock manually- and just to be a pain, it’s jammed in the open position. No idea how long it’s been like that, of course, but once we know about it, it has to be fixed ASAP. On the day we move, as it turns out.

Nice to see that the art of timing is alive and well.

UPDATE : She got offered the job! Yay!

Extended Sentence

Posted by: lyle    in Charm School, Customer Services, Work-related

Well, it’s been determined, my sentence here has been extended again – I’m now here ’til the end of August.

At that point, I’ll have been in this one contract for 11 months.

Time flies when you’re having fun.

Moving House

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, House Work

Today, we’re moving house. It should be fairly pain-free (with luck) – although most of it involves relying on other people to do stuff. (I’m looking at you, BT)

Of course, if BT don’t do their thing, I’m going to be offline for the weekend. We’ll see.

Preparations

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, House Work

Well, we’re just about ready.

The dog’s doped to the eyeballs, Psycho Cat is in a basket and ready for transportation. The current place is pretty much packed now – only the PC, desk, and stereo that really need doing now.

And then tomorrow it’s all happening.

At long bloody last.
