Well, all told the work day was a total fuck-knuckle. Abso-pigging-lutely pointless.
By my reckoning, I actually worked for 30 minutes today – at most.
I know, I shouldn’t complain at getting paid to do chuff-all (or very close to chuff-all, anyway) but it does my head in – I far prefer to be busy, rather than be bored and doing feck all.
I need to find something new to do, that’s for sure.
For some reason – I suspect primarily a reaction to the clocks messing about over the weekend – last night I was just not at all sleepy. In fact, I finally dropped off at around 3am, and then was up again at 6am to go to work.
All of which conspires to mean I’m utterly knackered today, and not really in the mood to do much at all. Mind you, that’s probably no bad thing, as I’ve got absolutely cock-all to do today except sit around and see if the latest thing I’ve written and launched for the company has any problems now it’s gone live and is being used by people.
So far in the 22 hours since it went live, we’ve found one tiny bug, one significant one that wasn’t caused by me, and one blip of weirdness that no-one can explain. And neither of the two fixes has taken me more than five minutes to do.
The problem is, with being this whacked, I’d rather be being busy, and having stuff to do. Sitting around doing fuck all is likely to result in me falling asleep at my desk…
As I may have mentioned before, sometimes a phrase or quote from someone just leaves me bemused, and wondering what the hell they were thinking at the time.
This happened to me again yesterday, reading the story about how a communications officer for British Transport Police lied about a significant fact, which then caused a delay in finding the body of a missing woman.
He wrongly claimed to Essex Police that trains were fitted with sensors that would detect any collision on the line. This affected the police’s “perception of the likelihood of Natasha being on the railway lines”, the report said.
“The communications officer admitted he lied to an Essex police officer, initially telling IPCC officers that he did so to end the call which would allow him to get on with his job, and that he actually had no knowledge of train sensors,” the report said.
Now really, you’ve just got to wonder about the motivation there, haven’t you?
I guess it could be paraphrased as “I told a lie so I could get rid of the call, and go back to doing something else. Sure, the call was about a missing 17-year-old girl, but that wasn’t my problem or my job.”
I just think the entire thing’s weird, let alone the motivation for using that as an explanation of why he made that mistake…
Today’s XKCD comic is just great.
It also probably sums up at least one reason why Herself will never allow me near oxy-acetylene cutting gear…
And after a week away from it, I’m back in the office. Yuck.
The 6am start came as an unpleasant shock, having been able to actually catch up on some sleep while away. I may have to consider moving things round a bit, so I can sleep more in the morning, go in later, and come home later. I don’t know.
The problem with that is that – as I’ve said before – my core deep sleep hours are 7-9am. If I can sleep through that period, I feel fine and caught up on sleep. However, waking up in the middle of that period wrecks me completely. So in that context, it’s probably better for me to be awake and operational earlier, as most places don’t actually like it if you don’t come in ’til 10.30 or so…
Anyway, I’m back in the office, and the day looms ahead…
While I’m definitely not a member of the Jacqui Smith fan-club, I do find the hysteria about the expenses claim error (where the expenses included two porn films her husband had watched) to be more than a little bizarre.
Firstly, this error is about a mere £10. Not exactly an earth-shattering amount, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Secondly, the claim actually went through – this is all a storm about something that has already happened. I don’t understand why it isn’t about “Well why wasn’t the claim checked properly in the first place?“. At least that would be justified. After all, most HR/Payroll departments check expenses claims pretty thoroughly in my experience – so why isn’t it the same for MPs?
And finally, why are there calls for Smith to resign about this expenses claim – for only £10, don’t forget – when they’re not clamouring for it over the other £116,000 that’s in doubt on other expenses claims she’s made?
It’s all just a bit bizarre…
Ah, the start of spring – the clocks went forward this morning, and that should be A Good Thing™.
The minor downside of Daylight Saving Time is that in theory I should change the way the time is displayed here on D4D™. Only I can never be arsed – so the entire site runs in GMT, regardless of whether it’s GMT or BST that we’re on.
Primarily this is because WordPress goes a bit odd when it comes to changing times – it becomes a global change, and all the time-stamps on the earlier posts get changed too. So I can’t be bothered to faff that much, and thus the decision was made to simply stick with GMT.
It’s not too much of a hassle, though – I just have to remember we’re in Summer Time when it comes to knowing when I want a future-post to go live.
Anyway, stop reading this rubbish, go out and enjoy the sun instead.
