A Good Start

Posted by: lyle   in Cynicism, Own Business, Work-related

It’s obviously the month for bankruptcies and liquidations. Following on from my post the other day about a company I’d worked with going into Liquidation, I got a letter in the mail yesterday to say that my fucking accountant has filed for Bankruptcy, and is no longer part of TaxAssist.

I don’t quite understand how an accountant – someone who’s supposed to be good with money, and at least understands what the hell is going on – can go bankrupt, but that appears to be the situation. Even better, I’ve been paying through the year for my tax returns to be done – and now, just when they’re going to want doing, the fucker’s disappeared.

So yes, I’m a creditor of the accountant – I’ve paid about £6-700 all told (I need to check the sums) for him to do both personal and business tax returns – and I fully expect to get back a grand total of sod-all.

Today I need to talk to

  1. Companies House (to change the company’s registered address away from the accountant – another service I paid for)
  2. Inland Revenue
  3. The Bank

And that’s just for starters.

It’s going to be an utter fucker of a day, I suspect…

*pulls face*

You paid up to £700 for an accountant? That sounds a hell of a lot to me. Was he dealing with every last receipt?

Whenever people ask me about how to choose an acountant I say the same as I do about builders. Only use one highly recommended by someone you really trust, and interview them first. Although IIRC you did do that a while ago?

Yep, did exactly that.

And £700 wasn’t a lot in comparison to the others – the other two I saw quoted >£1000 for doing personal & corporate tax returns, company annual return, and all the usual books crap.

The £700 was all that, plus £100 for hosting the company registered office, as Herself wasn’t happy about it being done at the house. (It’s going to be at the house for a while now ’til I look out a new accountant)

So all told it was about half the quoted price of anywhere else I spoke to. Maybe I should’ve taken the hint at that point – but Tax Assist came through as being highly reputable throughout. And in fairness to them, they’ve been fairly good about their franchisee going bankrupt.

But we’ll see.
