Mileage

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, Driving, Getting Organised, House Work

Today and tomorrow are going to be primarily spent in the car, I feel.

Today I’ve had an interview for a contract role down in Welwyn Garden City – checking out the lie of the land, and whether I can do the drive as a daily commute for a couple of weeks before knocking that back by working from home for a while (I can – the “2 hours+” listed by AA and TomTom rapidly descended to around the 90 minute mark, with just the A505 being a slow-moving piece of shit road)

Tomorrow is the longer (much, much longer) day – because of the planned work for next week, I’m taking Hound down to her old kennels/staying place in Wokingham. From there, I’ll be driving to the O2 arena (ex Millennium Dome) where we’ll be seeing Pink in concert – Herself plus Herself’s Sister and Husband will be driving down separately, and we’ll meet up at t’O2 – and then I’ll be driving home with Herself once the gig’s finished.

Saturday is going to involve a trip to Norwich to pick up the floor sanders, and over the next week we’ll finally be sanding down and re-sealing/varnishing the parquet floor in the hallway, which is the last of the big house jobs. Yay!

So don’t expect much in the way of updates tomorrow – although I might write a couple today if I can be arsed and/or think up stuff to write…

Swine ‘Flu – Guff

Posted by: lyle    in Cynicism, Health, Thoughts

Seeing all the media guff currently about the swine flu outbreak- and seeing some of the ridiculous “Have Your Say” comments about it- just leaves me cold.

At the end of the day, there’s nothing we can do about these outbreaks. They’ll either happen or they won’t. Sure, we might be able to take some preventive measures – but it’s undetermined whether they’ll work or not.

So what’s the point of worrying about something we have no control over?

Children’s behaviour ‘linked to sleep’

Well, duh

Who’d have thought – children’s behaviour can be linked to sleep, or lack thereof.

Shocker.

Low Interest

Posted by: lyle    in Animals, D4D™, Domestic, Writing

I know, a couple of quiet days here at D4Dâ„¢ – for some reason my writing mojo has disappeared recently.

It’s annoying, because I’ve actually got a few things on my mind that could do with being splurged out onto paper (Hello, Google) or screen, just to get them out of my head. But the writing bug just isn’t there, so it’s all still just sat up there, taking up space and not doing much.

In other news, Hound was at the vets this morning – and most unimpressed about it – for some tests, including blood tests and shit tests. (Which has also meant Herself collecting bits of Hound shit in little plastic bottles over the weekend – we needed three days worth!) We’ll find out the results in about a week, but it’s another thing that’s been on the mind, for obvious reasons.

Ah well, I’m sure normal service will be resumed shortly.

More Garden Activities

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, Green, Green Garden, Plots & Green Stuff

Following a (much-needed) lazy day on Saturday where very little at all got done, we’ve been a lot busier today. Continuing on from last weekend’s work, we’ve done…

  • Built two small(ish) raised beds (2m x 1m x 20cm)
  • Put together one higher raised bed (2m x 60cm x 90cm)
  • Moved two tons of bark-chip to cover the rest of the veg patch (and some of the chicken run)

So another productive day. The new version of the veg patch is pretty much complete now, with the exception of actually planting stuff. That’s most likely the work next weekend (as well as filling the new raised beds with earth, so that’ll be another ton of dirt moved) and then we’ll be done.

There’s still other stuff to do, of course – but the new version of the veg patch has been one of the big jobs on the list for this year, so it’s good to be nearly done with it.

Mind you, we’re both knackered now.

Sweary, utterly unsafe for work, but still very funny…

Bark Chip

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, Green Garden

As part of our ongoing alterations to the garden and veg-patch (primarily based around using raised beds for growing stuff, rather than the main veg-patch underneath) we’d also ordered about 2 tons of barkchip to cover the bits unused by raised beds.

It got delivered yesterday – slap-bang in the middle of the entrance to the driveway, so no vehicles can get past it. A bike might be able to, but nothing else.

Thankfully we’ve got a horse-shoe drive, so can use the other (much narrower) entrance to it. But you do have to wonder at the sense of leaving it there, rather than on the 20-odd-foot long length of verge between the two drive entrances.

Still, it defines what we’ll we be doing this weekend. Happiness, Joy etc. etc.
