Shoplifters

As usual, I haven’t quite got round to figuring the logic relating to this sign in our local Sainsbury’s…

How is this related to my safety and security?

How is this related to my safety and security?

I don’t know how prosecuting thieves is for my safety/security.

In fact, I’d suggest that a rather more honest sign would read

For our profits, we always prosecute thieves

Be Afraid

Currently, Psycho Cat is Not Amused with us – and we don’t know why. He’s just in an utterly foul mood, not even sleeping on the bed at the moment. As a result, this is the kind of thing we’re living with at the moment…

You want to try moving him?

You want to try moving him?

And if he sleeps outside, it’ll be on one of our cars, like this…

Asleep on the wipers

Asleep on the wipers

Aren’t we lucky?

Power of Suggestion

Now here‘s something I didn’t know – although bear in mind that the statistic comes from BSM, so shouldn’t be treated as absolute gospel.

According to BSM, about 70% of learners buy the same car model as they pass their test in.

Admittedly, we did the same back when I (finally) passed my test, and ended up with a Ford Focus, as that was what I’d learned in.

All the same, it’s interesting that 70% of new drivers do the same thing.

Blind Dog

No, not Hound.

This is a post about a dog going blind, and it makes for really interesting reading…

Her brain just works differently than ours do: I’m told when they go blind, dogs just think something along the lines of “It’s nighttime always now. Huh. How about that.” and they get on with it.

Delivery Weirdness

Posted by: lyle    in Customer Services, Domestic, Getting Organised, Weirdness

One of the more major changes (well, the major non-structural changes) when we re-did the kitchen this year was to get a new a gas cooker installed to replace the old electric piece of shit that came with the house.  It was a significant change because we’re not on mains gas here, so it also involves using gas cylinders.

Our first cylinder has finally run out, which means it’s time to get a replacement from Calor. There’s no urgency, due to having two cylinders, but equally it’s better to have the replacement sorted well before we actually need the sodding thing.

As a result, yesterday I called Calor’s local depot in Norwich (from which the cylinders were obtained by the people who installed the cooker) to order the replacement one. Except, based on our postcode, it turns out we don’t deal with the Norwich supplier/depot, but instead we deal with the – um – Bury St Edmunds depot.

According to the people at Calor Direct, getting our gas delivered from Bury St Edmunds is “more efficient”. But having checked on my faithful Route Planner, from the Norwich depot to this house is 19 miles.  From the Bury St Edmunds depot, it’s 36 miles – nearly double the distance.

So how is that more efficient?

Savings?

Posted by: lyle    in Customer Services, Cynicism, Thoughts, Weirdness

In the shops today, I came across something that I still can’t quite get my head around. It’s one of those things where you’re just not sure if you’ve missed something relevant, or if it really is that weird.

Let me explain.

At the moment, both Sainsburys and Tescos have a promotion where you can buy 2 two-litre bottles of Coke (or Diet Coke) for £2.  That’s fine.

However, right next to the individual bottles, they have a “Big Value” pack of 4 two-litre bottles. For £5.18 .

So the “Big Value” pack costs £1.18 more than 2 lots of the 2×2-litre deal.

What’ve I missed?

Playing with Concrete

Posted by: lyle    in Domestic, Getting Organised, Green Garden, House Work

Regular readers already know that when it comes to DIY I’m pretty much a total bell-end. It’s a thing I’ve inherited from my father, who is a world-renowned DIY bell-end, and tales of his idiocies have been used for me and my brother to dine out on many times.

Anyway, about two years ago, I put in a thing for the rotary drier/airer in the garden. At the time it was fairly straight, but over time it’s got more and more wonky.

So this time we got another fitting (this time with a built-in spirit level – genius!) and a bag of Postmix cement. You can see already where this might go horribly wrong, can’t you?

Only it didn’t – the holder is now cemented in properly (and absolutely straight!) and the airer’s post fits in it fine.

At the same time (i.e. while waiting for the postmix to set) we’ve also put up a hosereel thingy on the wall of the house, which’ll hold a 25m hose-reel – enough to get almost halfway down the garden – which should make for a tidier garden without sodding hosepipe coiled up in random places.

Sometimes, a day can be quite successful. Of course, I’m now waiting to find something to screw up in order to balance things out again…
