Best?

I must admit, and according to the media I’m in the minority here, but I really truly don’t care. At all. Yes, Best had a great talent for football, but he chose – and repeatedly chose – to piss it all away. Some say he couldn’t handle the pressure, the expectations, the fame. Maybe that’s true.
But for all the good he could’ve done, despite all the options that were open to him, he pissed it all away. And now, after umpteen years of self-destruction and trying to kill himself without recourse to actual suicide, he’s finally achieved his aim.
Absolutely agree, especially considering the amount of chances he had been given, particularly by surgery – and yet, he couldn’t find the willpower within himself to stay dry.
Yup. While I feel sympathy for his family and close friends because it’s never nice to watch someone die, I can’t help but feel that it was self-inflicted and feel a sense of quiet outrage that he got a chance at a new start that most people otherwise wouldn’t get, just because of who he was.
Sad all round, really.
Don’t forget that he was an addict, and that he hasn’t asked for any sympathy.
I’m not particularly touched by his death but I don’t think he deserves the criticism he has been receiving recently. There are many people in this country who will die younger than they should because of their lifestyle (smokers, drinkers, drug takers and people who are overweight), I believe he tried to stop drinking and failed, he’s not alone in that.
I have some sympathy for his addiction. However he managed to work his way through TWO donated livers so that sympathy is decidely tempered.
I really don’t understand the gushing that is going on though. “Biggest Funeral since Di” screamed one newspaper… really?
