Repaired
Posted: Fri 28 December, 2007 Filed under: Animals, Travel 2 Comments »Today I’ve had the headlamp unit on the car replaced, following Boxing Day’s collision.
The damage didn’t look that serious – only the sidelight had stopped working completely – but a couple of bits of the lighting surround and backing had broken too, so it ended up needing a complete new headlamp unit. Joy.
All told, £150 for the repair/replacement. It’s an extra expense I could’ve done without, but it’s still heaps better than it would’ve been if I’d collided full-on with the deer.
Glad it wasn’t more serious, and that you were doing a reasonable speed.
Years ago, one of Mr BW’s best friends spent 6 months in hospital after hitting a deer – he’s now mostly metal and minus one eye, but, amazingly, survived.
But – this sort of thing is why I think there should be a mandatory speed limit of 40mph on *all* country roads (hell, there are 20mph speed limits on most new housing estates round here, and 30mph on lots of wide A and B roads). That and protection of walkers and cyclists from idiots who think 70mph in a People Killer is fine, even though they can’t even see as far as the distance within which they can stop.
I disagree about the speed limit completely, BW – in this case, as I’ve said before, if I’d been going faster, I wouldn’t have even seen the deer, let alone hit it. In that particular situation, even if I’d only been going 20mph, I still wouldn’t have been able to get out the way of the idiot beast.
Of course, if someone’s going 70mph on a country road, they’re already breaking the speed limit, which is (at best) 60mph on single-carriageway roads.
Around here, there are lots of roads one can drive on at 60mph perfectly safely. There are other where it’s impossible to drive safely at that speed.
And there’s already legislation for the kinds of activity and driving you describe – the Road Traffic Act, and its dealings with dangerous driving, speeding, and the like.
