Co-proxamol

Interesting to see today that the painkiller co-proxamol is to be scrapped. Apparently it’s been linked with up to 400 deaths per year and a study found it was the second biggest method of drug-related suicide in the UK, accounting for almost one in five deaths.

I’ve used co-proxamol before, and I can see why it’s easy to overdose on, either intentionally or accidentally. It’s a seriously heavy gun in the world of painkillers, and while it’s sad to see something so effective be withdrawn from the market, I can understand the reasons why it’s necessary to do so.

    Hello,
Im in Scotland and I am a Named patient.

  3. Andrea says:

    Hey Chris πŸ™‚
Good to see you too! πŸ™‚
Well, I’m still getting mine from Cyprus although I’m not sure what’s going to happen as apparently they’re being phased out there too. πŸ™
I really can’t even think of that?! :/
How are you? Are you still managing to get some alright?

    Sarah
I’m in Scotland too. Which county are you in? I can’t seem to get mine on a named patient basis. πŸ™

  4. Chris says:

    Hi Andrea,
I am ok thanks, i only get this item from Cyprus at the moment. There is no news that i am aware, of a phasing out of this product in Cyprus, that news came out of a connection to P4u who were under pressure by the Gov to stop the supply. Probably best to keep plenty in hand though thats all we can do. I hope you are ok to. Chris

On the BBC News site tonight there is a place to comment if you have been unable to get meds from the NHS. I have already put my bit about Coproxomol on it. Take he chance to air your views.

See…When should drugs be refused on the National Health, to the right and low down on this page.

  7. Barbara Steward says:

ANother front page debate, Daily Mail online, Friday 20th Nov, a chance to put Coprox comments.
Article about the ban on prescribing the expensive cancer drug, still room for multiple comments.

  8. Paul E G Cope says:

Stuory in brief: Diabetic, Arthritic. Presribed co-proxamol for years, right up to end of 2007, then asked for “named patient” treatment but GP said no more or he loses his insurance. Bought some. Complained to DoH, passed to MHRA “try hospital pain clinic”. Result after several months on bought stuff, some useless, pain clinic prescribed for nearly a year but then refused 3 months ago. Now buying again, but have now got a final refusal from MHRA complaints office which I can take to higher level after the holiday. Watch this space.

    788, Hi Paul,

The experience you describe is terrible.

The MHRA have ignored 3 UK Westminster debates so they are arrogantly immune to you or I making a complaint.

I have it from two local chemists that UK Named Patient Coproxamol is now being phased out.

    So where next?

Well I may not know much, but I know how to make the MHRA take note. The Medical Health Regulator was personally and professionally reported to the GMC and within weeks he removed his registration as a doctor. He is an ex-doctor. Frustratingly I, nor I suspect many others on this site and around the UK didn’t get their day at his Fitness To Practice Hearing, as he jumped instead of being pushed.

Paul, what you can do is now write a complaint against the Medical Health Regulator to the Honours Forfeiture Committee.

Ask for an extract of the precise reason Breckenridge was awarded a knighthood, and also ask for the requirement and precedent for revoking knighthoods? If necessary on the second round of correspondence, start using Freedom of Information legislation.

Though as far as I know, another knight, Sir Roy Meadows who was struck off the GMC after the dreadful mess he made is still a knight.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4432273.stm

Don’t expect this to be a short fight, nor a small one. The Honours Forfeiture Committee don’t seem to understand the national disgust at such matters. They are, like MP’s in general out of step with public opinion. Example, MP’s expenses.

I suspect this will be a long drawn out fight, with ther MHRA eventually being put out of business, the GMC being restructured, and the whole, disreputable honours system being subject to a wholesale overhaul. To include new measures such as when a knight or Lord is jailed, their title is removed etc.

Though like all fights the outcome will come right. I know. I fought another government quango, and it eventually went up to the EU. The result, and it was a result, was that quango has ALL of its assets removed from it and had to tender for its right to run the operation it was formed for. It won the initial tender, but now has to re-tender every6 years.

Sorry Paul, meant to quote your Post 758 instead of the typo above in my Post 765.

    Cheers, and Happy new Year,

    Russ.

  17. Paul E G Cope says:

Thought it was some other Paul. PHSOmbudsman thinks she has the authority to act but I have to exhaust all lesser lines of protest first and then go via MP. Just one lesser line, ICAS, to go. MP is sympathetic but may become preoccupied shortly! A race against time.

AAAAAAHHHHHHH…..we have found life on Planet D4D….How is everyone ??

  19. Anne Tay says:

    Chris ,Russ,Andrea …Where are you all ?

  20. Chris says:

    Hi Anne,
I am still around, but as you can see it has all gone very quiet at the moment. Perhaps this is the calm before the storm as they say.

  21. James says:

Hello – Had a read of this thread / article / blog etc. I was given a load of these tablets some time ago after an operation and never took them. After reading whats written here I thought I would take a couple after getting a headache the other day. Amazing !! Is all I can say really. They made the pain totally dissapear within 20 minutes. I dont feel like killing myself either. Whats actually wrong with them?

  22. selina says:

  25. Chris says:

  26. Anne Tay says:

Hi Chris ,How are you?Well i guess everyone must be getting the DG OK ..See P4U site was down …..Wow what a price ..Eh …ANNE

  27. Russ McLean says:

    Dear Selina,

    PLEASE be careful.

Today one of the staff at Phrama2u who was over from Cyrprus to meet and collect her disabled son and take him back home to Cyprus was caught doing what you are suggesting you can emmulate. She was arguably just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

After having the Sword of Legal Damocles over her neck and being forced to remain under this worry for a year, she was sentenced to 8 months inmprisonment in the Stoke Courts on 30th March 2010.

PLEASE think long and hard about advertising any prescription drug. You must remain within the law, and in fact have a moral duty to require the law UK or EU applied to malpracticing employees at the MHRA.

What now has to happen as a start, is the GMC require to investigate each GMC registered doctor at the MHRA that lied or misled the public that the MHRA Coproxamol Named Patient was a safety net that would work. It failed catastrophically. The Medical Defence Union of Scotland gave the lie to that false MHRA Coproxamol safety net assertion – instructing all their member doctors to ignore the MHRA and stop ALL prescription of Coproxamol. Unfortunately for the MHRA and MDDUS both are on publis record asmitting that a small number (of the 1,700,000) patients formerly on Coproxamol would find it V|ERY difficult to change. Result – inumanity for tens of thousands.

The MHRA caused, and are still causing people to live and die in unmedicated pain.

Time for these incompetent people to be struck off, or jailed, or featured on Panorama. When their head performed

He was actually quoted in Parliament as saying he felt like hiding behind the sofa because his performance was that bad (BBC Panorama MHRA Seroxat Secrets Expose).

The whole MHRA eddifice is a disaster ruining and even killing people slowly through this mess.

Almost as bad, the MHRA are entirely Drug Funded. No government funding. Does this strike anyone as odd? Aroma of rodent present in the nostrils of and journalists reading this.

    I am absoultely disgusted.

    Russ.

  28. Twinkle says:

Both Meds have disappeared from P4U and I sent an e-mail but the answer I received isn’t really clear….anyone?

  29. Jo says:

A while since I posted last, but Co-Px seems to have disappeared from Prescribe4u, I had some about 6weeks ago, will keep u updated x

  30. Anne Tay says:

Hi to everyone long time no speak xxxx

  31. Paul says:

It looks like co-proxamol has been withdrawn from cyprus as well!

  32. Anne Tay says:

Oh ,What we going to do now ?…

  33. Cameron says:

I received an email from Prescribe4U customer service earlier today stating: “The Distalgesic produced from Cyprus has been phased out but we have sourced out another supplier from abroad, we will let you know as soon as we have the product in stock.” I will post further info if and when I receive it.

  34. Avril says:

I’ve been having a lot of trouble getting into this forum recently and in posting. Is it just me?

I also emailed P4U a couple of weeks ago and Claire said they were expecting some in 2 or 3 weeks. Emailed her again and waiting on reply but nothing showing on site yet.

Offshore have it but not straightforward to buy and pay for. Anyone used them recently?

  35. Avril says:

    PS

Still having some trouble but getting in now.
Meant to say – I came across a site called superdrugsaver.com who have Darvocet-N.

I know about Darvocet but not Darvocet-N ?
    Anyone used it/them?

I don’t know any other site like this where I can keep in touch with others with the same problem and I worry in case it ever becomes unavailable so I’m happy to swap real email addresses with anyone in order to swap product info.
I haven’t put it on here yet as I don’t think this forum allows it.

  36. Anne Tay says:

Avril put your email add on here i will get back to you

  39. Anne Tay says:

Sorry Avril never received your email ….

  40. Tony says:

In New Zealand, we had Digesic followed by a generic called Paradex which appears to be the equivalent of your much-missed Co-propoxamol. This was phased out from 1 August 2010. It does not seem to be widely known that over 10% of northern Europeans lack the essential liver enzyme CYP2D6 which converts codeine into useable morphine for pain relief. Hence analgesics based on codeine do not give relief. I have collected the last 240 tabs of Paradex today fully subsidied. However, I find we have provision under our Medicines Act to continue receiving supply of Paradex at a cost of around L4.50/100 in your currency or $NZ10.00/100 locally. Nothing else works for me after a botched knee surgery. Tramadol totally useless which has now been placed on the free list. Keep up the battle there and my very best wishes.

I have been looking for the catch but two pharmacies have assured me of this although a doctor’s prescription is required as before.

  41. Andrea says:

  44. Andrea says:

    Hey Guys,
This is getting beyond a joke πŸ™ I went to Offshore’s site to try and order but although it states veripayment/visa at the top of the page, when you add to cart, the only option I seem to get is mini teller πŸ™ Does anyone know a way around this? I have emailed them twice but they have never replied πŸ™
    Thank you
    Andrea
    πŸ™‚

  45. Chris says:

    Andrea,
It’s a while since i bought from there, but i think an option is Western Union. They would send you the details.

    Chris

  46. Andrea says:

    Thank you Chris πŸ™‚
I eventually received a reply from them.

  47. Twinkle says:

I’ve emailed Offshore so many times in the last couple of months and not received one reply.

They keep sending me emails with offers from their sister site 247medicines but distalgesic isn’t listed on that particular site so I’m not sure what’s going on to be honest.

Please let us know if you order and receive Andrea….their DG’s were always good quality….good luck

  48. Andrea says:

    I will Twinkle. πŸ™‚

  49. Mandy says:
