New House – One Week On

In that week, though, we’ve been fairly busy. Considering that this time last week we were still really in just a house full of boxes, we’re now pretty much settled, although there’s still one room that’s full of boxes. Then again, most of those aren’t likely to get unpacked unless it’s a situation of great need (i.e. I’ve got nothing to read) because it’s the dread book boxes, and if we can get away with not needing to unpack those and then repack them in six months time, that’s A Good Thing. (But I bet at least one gets opened and fecked about with in the time we’re here)
But the place is pretty much sorted. We’ve had to buy a new fridge (the kitchen isn’t designed to hold a fridge-freezer, and it’s a pain in the arse to have to go out to the garage every time you make a cup of tea or whatever) Actually, we’ve bought two fridges, only the first one didn’t fit, because while the gap for the appliance may look like a standard 600mm gap, the fuckwit twats who fitted it actually made it about 570mm. No idea why, other than incompetence, but there we go. So the first fridge we bought was 585mm wide – and of course didn’t fit the fucking hole. So we had to take it back, and order a different one instead.
Moral of this part of the story – Assume all you want, but make sure you still measure the fucker before buying anything to fit.
Other than the fridge farce, well, the place isn’t perfect – there’s a small matter of some holes in the garden fences and hedges that an inquisitive collie can disappear through with ease, and there’s also a ditch down one side of the garden that the self-same collie can dive into and come out muddy and stinking. So at some point, probably this weekend, we’re going to put up a temporary fence (Blues Brothers moment : “Chicken Wire?”) which’ll stop her from doing that too much. But it’s an OK place, it means we’re based where we want to be, and can start checking out the surrounding area, finding the places we’d like to live on a more permanent basis – and, of course, also the ones that we wouldn’t touch with a shitty stick.
Speaking of animals, Psycho Cat is still cooped up in the house, and while he’s settling into the idea, he’s still a grumpy, tempramental little sod (who really does put the mental in tempramental) and Hound is being very careful to not push her luck too much with him.
But yes, one week in, and things seem to be going OK. Only another five months and three weeks to go…
