Suddenly Missing
Posted: Wed 2 April, 2008 Filed under: Driving, Weirdness 2 Comments »When driving, I’ve noticed there’s something I sometimes find quite distracting. It’s when a car suddenly disappears from the rear-view mirror.
It’s happened a few times recently – and OK, I suppose it’s better than having one suddenly disappearing from in front of you, at least. But it really is quite disconcerting to be driving along, knowing what’s in front and behind, then checking the mirror and it’s a completely different vehicle. Most bizarre – and distracting for a good couple of seconds, if nothing else.
Even worse (in my opinion) is when I’ve overtaken someone on a motorway or dual carriageway, then indicate to pull in and the car I’ve just overtaken has disappeared. That’s really distracting (particularly on motorways) and makes me wonder if the car’s in my blind-spot (which, on an estate car is pretty large) before I spot that they’ve also moved over to the first lane.
It’s just weird and distracting, that’s all.
Myself and my Dad were driving home one night, and we noticed a police car following us. We went down a country lane (not to escape, it was just the way home) and after a couple of miles of the police car still being there, it suddenly disappeared. We were curious, so we stopped, and went back up the road a bit.
The police car was in a ditch about half a mile back. Which I found to be hilarious, but the two policemen found to be not even slightly funny. We even offered to help them get the car out, but they informed us that they would be okay.
I’m still laughing.
Matt, that is excellent. Thanks for brightening up a dull day – I shall have that vision for a while. 🙂
