Firefox
Posted: Tue 25 January, 2005 Filed under: Geeky 2 Comments »It’s impressive to see that Firefox has now been downloaded over 20,000,000 times in only 76 days.
As browsers go, Firefox is definitely my one of choice (although I still do a fair amount of stuff with Opera too) and it’s the first one I install on any new computer, which is normally a pretty good indicator.
And if you haven’t tried it yet, why not?

Anti Spam – the Saga Continues
Posted: Sun 23 January, 2005 Filed under: D4D™, Geeky Leave a comment »I’ve now installed a different anti-spam plug-in. We’ll see how this one goes. If anyone feels that their comments have gone astray, or that there’s a problem with how it’s working, let me know by email, sending it to lyle2 at the domain name. ( i.e. @dummies-for-destruction.co.uk ). Cheers.
Anti-Spam fuckup
Posted: Sun 23 January, 2005 Filed under: D4D™, Geeky 2 Comments »Well, Spam-Karma was an interesting experiment, but ultimately flawed. Possibly because I’m still “only” on WP1.2 instead of the nightly 1.5 and so on, I’ve discovered that once SK had decided a comment was Spam, there appears to be no way to get it back. And frankly, that’s shite.
My apologies to Anni and Gordon (and at least one other contributor) whose comments were nicked by SK and shoved into some weird ether database. If I can recover the comments then I will, but for now, ’til I figure out what the fuck it’s doing, SK has been killed off.
It’s a pain, because it was doing a nice job on the other stuff…
Comment Spam
Posted: Thu 20 January, 2005 Filed under: D4D™, Geeky Leave a comment »Following on from attacks over the last couple of weeks, I’ve got round to installing Spam Karma to see how we do. Frankly, if it even halves the amount of shit littering d4d™’s comments, I’ll be happy.
Supposedly, WP1.4 or 1.5 will have a lot more anti-spammer stuff in it out of the box, but well, we’ll see.
Frustration
Posted: Wed 19 January, 2005 Filed under: Geeky, General Leave a comment »Part of the problem with going between MySQL and SQL Server is that certain datatypes and so on are very different.
I’m now re-doing the database for the third time, because also SQL Server doesn’t let you alter datatypes once they’ve been entered.
Grrrrr. Microsoft. Grrr.
Headchuffed
Posted: Tue 18 January, 2005 Filed under: Geeky Leave a comment »Today I’ve discovered (yet again) that actually one of my biggest problems when it comes to running my own site-design business as well as working for a living is when the two sections bounce off each other.
The place I’m now working for is very much an ASP house, it’s all Microsoft, OLEDB, ODBC, SQL Server and the like. The stuff I do for myself is far more “Open Source” – PHP, MySQL, that kind of thing.
The conflict comes when you try writing ASP commands in a PHP page, and vice versa. And yes, I’ve done both today. Utterly tubular, but the joys of keeping at least two programming languages current in the brain at the same time, particularly when they do pretty much the same things.
Anyone got any paracetamol?
Corners
Posted: Thu 13 January, 2005 Filed under: D4D™, Geeky Leave a comment »A couple of days ago I was whittling on about rounded corners when you view this site in Firefox, and as Caitlin rightly pointed out, there were a whole lot less rounded corners than I thought there were. Ooops.
Anyway, I’ve found the problem, and will be fixing that too over the next few days. The blue colourscheme already has them, if you’re interested.
