Considering a replacement

Over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed that my laptop is slowly but surely dying. It may just be time to start thinking about a replacement.

In fairness, this one has lasted two years of really pretty abysmal treatment. It’s been dropped a couple of times, and survived with no more than a couple of cracks. (One by the cd-drawer, one on the back) and a couple of dents. If nothing else, that’d be impressive.

However, it’s also spent most of its life being lugged about in a backpack (I make it a matter of principle to not bother with laptop bags) and is generally scuffed, beaten, and it looks like it gets used every day. Which, of course, it does.

But now the keyboard is also dying, the keys are getting more temperamental, and more than a bit worn.

It’ll last me a while yet, I’m sure – but I think it’s time to start thinking about a new one. Which is a bit of a pain – but at least this time it’ll come in as a business expense, which is a bit better for things in general.

Why are laptop bags a matter of principle??

Because they make you more of a target. If I’m wandering around with my laptop in a backpack, no-one knows I’ve got it there. If, however, I’m carrying a laptop bag slung over my shoulder then the odds are I’ve got a laptop.

I’ve seen several people get themselves divested of visible technology/gadgets, including a goodly number of laptops – laptop bags might as well carry a printed advert on them saying “I’m carrying lots of high-value small-size tech items that’ll be worth a bit”.

Therefore, matter of (personal) principle, I don’t use laptop bags, or generally advertise what gubbins I happen to be carrying around at any time.

Call me paranoid if you want, but it works for me.

Me too (but mine is nearly 4 and almost out of extended warranty – I shll have them out to replace the guts one more time before it runs out, but it will only do as a spare).

Aldi have what looks like a good one on special next Thursday… includes 3 years warranty and a bag you won’t want 🙂 I’ve been very very very impressed with all the Medion stuff I’ve bought in the past couple of years.

    What do you think?
