Unavailable

I don’t know why, but on several occasion this week, d4d™ has been coming up on my browser as “connection refused” or even “does not exist”. I suspect it’s been happening to other people as well – because my readership figures are at about 75% of the ones from the rest of the month, which I guess is pretty significant.

If you’ve had this problem at all, can you let me know? (I know you haven’t had it this time, or you wouldn’t be reading the page, but hey, I’m sure you’ll figure it out) I want to know a bit more before I go chasing up 34sp.com about it all…

CTO

There are times when I truly wonder whether our CTO (Chief Technical Officer) really has any clue at all when it comes to websites and the like.

The company currently runs about 30 websites, one of which has a large forum for users of the software to comment on it, make suggestions, bug reports and the like. That’s fine, even when it’s run within the sack-of-festering-shite known as Mambo. However, he insists that it’s also left wide open, so that people can write a post on it without registering themselves on the site. Naturally this has come to the attention of a bundle of scumbag spammers, who are currently blasting the thing into oblivion. (About 15,000 posts today so far) Oh dear.

Now, because the CTO is a knob slightly under-represented on the IQ front, he still wants the forum to be left open, rather than insisting that people register before posting. He feels that registration will mean people don’t make comments, and would apparently rather leave the site open to spam-scum. Seems bizarre to me, and I’ve said so in no uncertain terms. But he’s still insistent on this policy, although he has then said “But I want you to bar the IP addresses that the spammers are using, and block their accounts” It doesn’t seem to have sunk in yet that they don’t have fucking accounts, they’re logged in as “Guest”. Gah.

It makes life interesting, to say the least.

Other than that, the current stuff I’m working on involves user registration, which he’s fine with in this case because it’s fundamental to how the site works. (There’s a logic there somewhere, fighting to get out and be understood.) However, he’s also heard the expression “single sign-on” somewhere, and so wants me to check my users when they log-in/register against the user tables of four other websites in order to make sure that if they’re already registered on those, they can use the new one without any problem.

I’m now on the fifth re-write of the log-in/registration script, as the goalposts change. Which, again, makes life interesting…

WW

Today’s post contained a serious goodie – well, two goodies if you count the photos from the weekend’s Murder Mystery Party.

But no, the main goodie came from Amazon, that I’d (almost) forgotten I’d ordered – Season Six of “The West Wing“, which hasn’t even made it onto E4 yet over here, let alone Channel 4. Yes, I could’ve downloaded the episodes, and watched them after they came out, and I could even do the same with the current Season Seven, but I either keep forgetting, or can’t be arsed – I know it’ll come out over here as a box-set, so why hurry and then have to wait even longer?

Still, it does mean we’ve got plenty to watch over the oncoming darker nights.

And yes, I suppose I could/should wait ’til my birthday for this kind of thing when it’s come out barely a month before, but well, some things can’t wait. The West Wing is one of them. Sad, but true.

Let there be light

Now I have to say, this is a pretty cool idea – one of those where everyone suddenly goes “Why didn’t I think of that?!?”

Slight concern

OK, this is a geeky post par excellence, so if you’re not interested in geeky-type stuff, there’ll be a more normal post a bit later on. Otherwise, click on the more link…

Techno-illogical

The bloody stuff’s following me around, I tell you. At home the broadband internet connection through NT-fuckin’-‘L is still down, so we’ll probably end up having to deal with that bunch of incompetent tossers tonight.

Then I get to work, and most of our servers (hosted, ‘conveniently’ in New York) are offline and tits-up. Mail, web-server, really the entire lot is just carked. I can’t even get in to them in order to try and do anything. And the person who does all that crap is in California, and thus not even awake yet. I’m currently deciding whether I should wake the twat up. My bosses are saying I shouldn’t. Time will tell.

And then I try to get through to Inland Revenue (a story in itself, but one I can’t yet be arsed to rant about it) after trying for a month and only getting an engaged tone, only to be told “Sorry, our systems are down at the moment. Can you call back another time?”.

File under “Days, One of those“.

Technology

Over the last few weeks it’s occurred to me that in some ways I can be a really awkward bugger. Among other things, I’m currently looking at ordering all the bits for a new PC – again, I just haven’t got round to ordering them yet, but I will, probably this weekend – which will be the first one I’ve had in about four years. Because of the stuff I do, I don’t need my PC to be constantly updated to the newest, whizziest processor/memory/graphics card – I don’t play PC games much, so I don’t need cutting-edge stuff to keep up with that market. However, the stuff I’m going to be getting for the new PC is going to be as up-to-date as possible, potentially even getting a 64-bit processor for a bit of future-proofing.

Recently, one of the guys at work got a Sony PSP, and yes, I really want one of those – it’s something I can see myself using for a variety of things. It most certainly would’ve made waiting around Thiefrow and Schiphol a lot easier this week, if nothing else!

And yet when I see Gordon‘s new 4Gb iPod Nano I just don’t feel the need or the desire for one at all. I’ve got a little MP3 player USB stick thing which holds 6 albums, and that’s all I really need. It’s nice, and it’s sufficient for my requirements.

So what kind of techie geek does that really make me?
