ePlumber

The BBC has a story about the first (and I hesitate to use the terminology) ‘digital plumbers’ having qualified from their course.
The “digital plumbing” qualification – CompTIA HTI+ – has been set up with the help of funding from Yorkshire Forward investment.
The course will make sure that dedicated certified professionals have the expertise to install and maintain home networks, providing a “one stop shop” for people.
Fair enough, I know that networking home stuff can be a total twunt to do, but “digital plumbers”? Give me a break.
Naming of the Shrew
Posted: Thu 10 March, 2005 Filed under: Geeky, Resolutions 1 Comment »About a year ago, I bought the domain name Twadge.com, round about the same time I was having some fun designing mugs with the same word on. It’s not really been used since then – more as a data-space than as a website, if I’m honest.
However, one of my resolutions for ’05 was to fold up my old company and ring in the changes of lifestyle etc. by doing other stuff instead. That’s all continuing apace, and is going quite well so far.
But – and this is where life could get interesting – I’m still going to be doing website-y stuff for small clients and the like. So, should I fold up my existing company’s website as well, and go for total reinvention of website stuff as Twadge webdesign (which appeals in SO many ways – all of ’em wrong!) or keep the old company name active, but simply be me trading as that business name ?
Both ways are doable, and keeping the business name, although not as a limited company, means I don’t have to start completely from scratch.
Hmmm, decisions, decisions.
Photography
Posted: Sun 6 March, 2005 Filed under: Geeky, Photography 6 Comments »Well, I did get quite a lot of photos over the weekend – some of which I’m really pleased with. A trip to Windsor to see the castle (the joys of friends with children) got some really good bits, and lots of portrait-type stuff which has worked out really well, although a lot of it won’t be publicised here due to certain issues with photos of kids, and the internet. Joy.
What I do find though – and I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this – is that I take a lot of photos in “portrait” orientation, instead of landscape. It’s not something I think about a lot while taking photos, it’s just a natural camera positioning, but when it comes to Photoshop afterward, I probably have to re-orient about 2/3s of the shots, which can be a pain in the arse.
Of course, once a digital SLR is in my possession then it becomes less of an issue, as both of the main ones I’m considering come with the ability to automagically reorient themselves so that picture rotation becomes a thing of the past. But for now I’m stuck with using a Rotate function somewhere along the line. No big thing really, just an extra thing to do/ remember.
So – which format do you prefer for photos? And why?

Not fun, but all part of life at the moment. *sigh*
Always Impressive

I’ve finally figured it out today – and while it’s one of the passwords I use on a semi-regular basis (i.e. I know what they are, and there’s about seven of them – but none of them are relevant to me, except as passwords. If that makes sense.) it does help if I type it in correctly on the original application, doesn’t it?
Still, I suppose that if I can’t figure out what a password is, then it’s likely to at least be pretty secure…
Book List
Posted: Fri 25 February, 2005 Filed under: D4D™, Geeky 3 Comments »As yet it’s not comprehensive (mainly because I’m having problems remembering some of the stuff I’ve read this year – Alzheimers is slowly kicking in) but the book list I detailed yesterday is now up and running.
I’m still going to twadge about with the idea a lot more, I’m sure – but it’s a start, and a project in progress. And yes, the database worked fine first time. God I’m sad.
PICS
Posted: Thu 24 February, 2005 Filed under: D4D™, Geeky, Sweary 2 Comments »Via Gordon, who’s banging on about PICS labels, I’ve now added one to d4d™.
PICS “was originally designed to help parents and teachers control what children access on the Internet, but it also facilitates other uses for labels, including code signing and privacy.
As you can see here, I don’t have nudity or pictorial violence on the site, but the profanity count is through the roof. Can’t figure out why the shit I would be so high on that bastard though. Oh, um, yeah.
You can sort out your own PICS tag using The ICRA label generator. Fun for all the family.
