Back

More later, once we’ve recovered and dried out a bit.

Wilderness

Away all weekend in the arse end of nowhere. AKA Somerset.

With luck there’ll be no fireworks at all where we are – although I’m not counting on that. Last time we did this, and went somewhere that fireworks were actually banned by the company, the bloody groundskeeper for the local stately(ish) house that owned the property we were in decided to have a mini-display in the garden. The fucker.

So we’ll see. I’m sure I’ll write more about it on our return. (not that anyone cares, but that’s the way of the world)

And when I come back I’ll also be 34, a birthday having occurred too.

All Quiet

Have I missed out on a national holiday of some sort? The journey in to work today was one of the quietest I’ve seen – hardly anyone on the train, or at the stations. All very bizarre.

Normally the 8.50 is rigid with people (although, in fairness, not as rigid as the 8.20 is – hence why I get the 8.50!) and the flood of passengers getting off at Bracknell to go to work is huge. Today it was more of a trickle than a flood, and I’ve no idea why. Even looking out onto the main street from the office, Wokingham is far quieter than usual. Weird.

Multi-day Writing

Today’s one of those odd days. We’re away from tomorrow ’til late Monday, so not only am I writing stuff for today, but also trying to add in some posts for while I’m away.

Basically, what this means is that I get to do five day’s worth of posts in one day. Which is a bit of a mental struggle sometimes.

Maybe I should just let d4d™ be a bit quieter over the weekend, but well, I still find I like writing stuff for it, so we’ll just have to see how it goes, won’t we.

EOS 20D

Yes, I’ve now got the digital SLR I was aiming for – the Canon EOS 20D. I managed (after some struggle) to get the package that included both the Canon 18-55mm Lens and the Sigma 55-200mm lens – and all for less than the RRP of the body on its own. Camera pricing is weird.

Of course, the learning curve on this thing is going to be enormous. I’ve actually taken the radical step of reading the instruction manual – that’s how steep the curve’s going to be. I’m over the moon with it, and looking forward even more now to being away next weekend.

Yes, we’re off again next weekend – well, a) it’s my birthday on the 5th, and b) it should hopefully reduce Hound’s anxiety about fireworks. We’re going to be in the backside of nowhere in Somerset, roughly where we went earlier in the year.

I got some fantastic stuff last time we were down there, several shots from which have been printed up to A4 size, framed, and now populate some of our walls. So it’ll be interesting to see what I can get with the 20D…

Chocolate

Well, having tried out the chocolates I got from Puccini Bomboni in Amsterdam, I have to say that despite the recommendations, I (and Herself) still think that the chocolate from Hotel Chocolat is far superior.

So there.

Chuffers

Bloody trains – after doing so well for most of the year, as soon as the weather officially turns to shit, so does the service. On Friday I was half an hour late, and today it was quarter of an hour late.

The thing is, I swear you can hear the Random Excuse Generator kicking in…

Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m sorry to announce that the 8.50 to Reading is delayed by 15 minutes because of …
[clickety clickety]
… a short problem with the signalling equipment.

And you can just hear the thought process of “Oh, yeah, signalling equipment, that’s a good one. I’ll use that, and we’ll stick with it for this train. Now, what can we have for the next one, that’s basically “delayed because it’s behind the one that’s already running late“, but we can’t say that…”
