Colours – Again

OK, so I was about right in what I figured, regarding website colours and so on.

As with most things – some people like it, some people hate it, and the majority don’t seem to care one way or t’other. Figures.

However, the experiment between “Worksafe” and “Inverted” wasn’t just about people’s reactions to colour, it was also about which produced less eye-strain after a while using it. My personal preference is still for light text on dark backgrounds, whereas most people seem to prefer dark-on-light. I’d guess that’s down to being used to newsprint, and print in general, with black ink on white/whiteish paper.

I do find that after a solid day of looking at a white background to work on, my eyes can be quite tired. It’s the constant “glare” of a predominantly white screen day in, day out, that seems to have an effect. And on that score, light text on a dark background seems to produce less eye-strain, and less headaches.

But from the look of it, on the commercial things I’m doing, I’m going to have to go with dark-on-light as a preference on the colour schemes. I might put in a colour-switcher similar to d4d™ though, just to give people the option (and, of course, so I can have my preferred light-on-dark scheme for working on the bugger x hours a day!)

As always, any thoughts or responses will be greatfully received…

Thinking About… Colour

As with yesterday’s “Thinking About…” post, don’t even bother if you’re not interested in web design and so on…

Business Banking

Hmm, well, what with one thing and another, I think I need to start looking around again at business banking.

I’ve used Royal Bank of Scotland before, and they were OK (well, once they’d got rid of the useless twunt who first dealt with the account, and took three months to get it set up properly) but I’d rather not use them again. In fact I’m thinking of migrating from RBoS anyway, as the branches are a bit sparse Dahn Sarf.

So – any recommendations?

Thinking About… Development

DISCLAIMER : If you’re not interested in web design/ development and some of my thoughts and plans regarding it over the next few months, don’t even bother clicking on the “more” link underneath – you’d just be bored!

Workload

Note to Self : Stop looking at various websites and realising how much work can be done on them.

You’ve got enough on your plate for now – stop looking for even more work, you fool! And yes, OK, it’s more money coming in, but you’re in danger of being in a situation where your brain writes cheques your body can’t cash.

Now slow down for a bit, sort out some stuff before the next phase kicks in. You can get these other sites on the next phase – they’ve been in a shonky state for years already, they’re not going to do owt radical in the meantime, OK?

Delayed Again

Work’s just beginning to get to me slightly. Yet again, the site launch has been delayed – this time by another two months – while they fuck about deciding a) what it should be called, and b) what it should look like.

Even if all goes well with this time period – and I’m not convinced it will – then I don’t think it’ll now launch ’til May/June, which will mean I’ve been here a year without anything that’s publicly visible. I’m now on version 4 of the site, and no-one’s really seen the first three, which I must admit I find pretty frustrating.

It doesn’t, however, mean I’m looking to move on or anything. I’ve learned a lot about the social-network side of web design, which has been interesting. And I’m in the process of developing some other ideas based around the concept for myself, some of which look (on initial “what-if?” type research) like they could be pretty good earners. And, with my normal skill, with some pretty stonking domain names too.

More will be revealed over the course of the year, obviously – but for now I’m keeping it all fairly schtum.

As for the “proper” work one, well, we’ll just have to see, won’t we.

Own Stuff

Of course, one good thing about working from home over the last few days has been that I also had the time (and, for once, the inclination) to sort out a sort-of-corporate(ish) website for my own private web-design stuff and so on. It used to be the site I used for my limited company, but as I folded that up last year, I needed to re-do some of the stuff so it was more about being me, rather than a limited company.

So I’ve spent time re-writing bits, re-organising other bits, and updating it as and when necessary. And now it’s live.

On that score I intend to keep work stuff and d4d™ a bit seperate, so I’m not going to add links between the two. I don’t mention d4d™ over there either, as it’s a personal site. Let’s face it, I’ve been known to bitch a bit about pain-in-the-bum clients before now, and I don’t want that to be easily linked to from the business side of things.

I’ve been thinking about putting a “workblog” into the other site, but as yet I’m still undecided. It smacks slightly of spreading myself too thin, to keep another blog even semi-updated as well as the regular stuff on d4d™, but it’s something I’ll keep on thinking about while I see how other stuff goes over there.

But at least it’s another thing struck off my “to-do” list.
