Hand Coding

There are times where I can just end up feeling like a complete numpty. This has been one of those days.

Because I’m also an epically sad git, when it comes to writing webpages and PHP (PHP in particular, in this case) I tend to write them by hand, rather than using programs like DreamWeaver or whatever to do the work for me. There’s a lot of reasons for this, primarily that if I write it I know what I’ve done, it’s fixed in my head, and I can go back later, look at it, and know what I’m doing. Dreamweaver in particular is not good for that kind of thing.

The down-side of hand-coding, though, is that on occasion you can make a right arse of things, and then it can take a while to figure it out. And that’s what’s happened today. I’ve been trying to figure out why something was displaying when it shouldn’t be. And could I? Could I eckerslike.

I’ve finally figured it out though, and it’s a simple mistake because of writing stuff by hand.

In PHP, setting a variable is done by using $variable=1;

If you then want to check the value of it, you need to use if ($variable==1) .

Yes, I was checking it with if ($variable=1), which in PHP is something that’s always true – because you’ve assigned it to be 1 in that self-same line. One character wrong, and now it’s all fixed and working perfectly. And it only took three hours to figure out…

And so we’re back…

We did travel home yesterday, but it took so bloody long that by the time we got back I couldn’t be arsed to do anything that even resembled technical, or even thought-based. Which is why we’ve got through the bloody awful Casualty two-parter that’d been recorded on Sky+ for Herself…

Having left Norfolk at 11.15, we finally got home at 7pm. OK, so we’d stopped off along the way for lunch (roughly half an hour) and to drop off Herself’s Grandfather, and pick up Hound (at different places, I should point out) but all the same, it was a good six+ hours in the car. It was a nightmare. And most of it wasn’t even due to snow – it was just due to gimps all driving at the same time. And yes, that does mean that in this instance we were gimps too.

Still, all went well, and the Festering Season was actually a pretty good one. About which more later, I’m sure. But for now, well, we’re back, d4d™ is back, and I’m working from home while listening to the radio. Which is, as expected, shit.

Resolutions Finale

Ah yes, back to that old chestnut for the Festering Season, resolutions. Well hell, it fills some space while I’m away…

Anyway, not much has changed since last time I posted on the subject – bit of a dead loss really.

But this is also where it gets interesting. Because I need to come up with some ideas for the ’06 Resolutions. And that’s what I’m going to be doing over the next few days. Some of the outstanding ’05 ones will probably make it onto the list, but perhaps not all of them.

And in the meantime, yes, I’m thinking about some new challenges and ideas. Got to keep myself mentally active and all that. After all, I’m thirty-bloody-five in ’06…

Anarchistic

Now here’s a thing…

Am I the only one who sees these nice new “gated communities” getting built, all eight-foot metal fences, remote-control gates and so on, and then just wants to take a couple of big strong cycle locks and lock the gates together, then see what the snotty-nosed arseholes do?

There’s one being built on the way to work, and every time I go past the signs for “secure gated community” I want to do it. No real reason, it just strikes me as funny…

364 Shopping Days To Go

Well, that’s it for another year.

Hoo-rah.

Merry Syphilis To You All

Well, at long last it’s 25th December. Happy Fucking Christmas to you all, and Thank God it’s nearly over with.

Bah humbug.

One Year On

It’s hard to believe that this time last year I’d just left Oldham Council for the last time. Once that was done, I was heading down to Norfolk (As I am this year) and once that was done, moving to Bracknell to live with Herself.

There’s been a lot that’s happened in this last twelve months, and it’s all been pretty damn good.

2006 has a lot of stuff coming up too, but for now I’m just looking forward to getting on with it, and hoping it’s as productive as 2005 has been. I might even figure out that sweary filter for d4d if I get the chance. It’s only been in the offing for a year, after all…

Only without the equivalent of CrapCo, if possible.
