Middle of the Road

Yesterday was another Devon run, 400 miles in a day, as well as a bundle of work meetings and so on.

Yes, I must be mad.

Anyway, the entire run is motorway miles, which I don’t mind, and which the car pretty much shrugs off.

It does mean, though, that I come across *way* too many shitbag arsewipe drives who just sit in the middle lane, nothing on the inside lane, and sit there for mile after mile after mile.

It’s another of those things I don’t understand at all, and that seems to be becoming more and more prevalent. I kind of get it if there’s sporadic traffic (and particularly slower trucks etc.) on the inside lane, and the driver is just too lazy to “keep on” moving in and out to overtake. I kind of understand that – I don’t like it, and I think it’s still shit driving – but I sort of understand the thoughts.

But when even that isn’t an excuse, when the road is clear for miles ahead (and has been for miles already) I think it’s just a sign that the driver is an unutterable fuck-knuckle, with no redeeming factors whatsoever.

Part of the problem is shown in your post!

There isn’t an ‘inside lane’. There is a driving lane and two overtaking lanes.

Why they don’t teach that I’ve no idea.

    No, me either.

Although “inside lane” is an OK term, it’s the lane on the inside of the three. (Not like I called it the ‘slow lane’ – I actually think that’s the terminology that confuses, where instead of ‘inner lane’ or ‘driving lane’ it’s the ‘slow lane’, with ‘overtaking’ and ‘fast’ lanes.)

Those who hog the middle, or outside, lane are those who tend to be the least alert to anything that happens. I love lane bobbing – and that means using the lanes correctly, as they are supposed to be used – as that keeps me alert (in my opinion) to all that is happening around me.

Traffic police (those that I know anyway) say ‘lane 1’ ‘lane 2’ and ‘lane 3’ these days.

I think that people driving with no lights at dusk, or front fogs on becuase they want to be trendy is a much worse problem than people who have bad lane discipline.

People who drive with fog lights left on should be punished by summary execution.

Those who drive without lights in situations are idiots, and should have their driving licences revoked. (Or summary execution. I’m open to options)
