Cricket Update
Posted: Wed 1 December, 2010 Filed under: Animals, Domestic 1 Comment »While things are quiet, enjoy the latest photo of Cricket, the Silver Bengal.
She really is utterly beautiful, and beginning to like me enough to come and sit on me. With Bengals (as Fabulous Lorraine says here in a fantastic post) affection is very much on their terms, like it or lump it. Cricket’s starting to trust and accept me, and that is A Very Good Thing.
David Attenborough on God

I often get letters, quite frequently, from people who say how they like the programmes a lot, but I never give credit to the almighty power that created nature. To which I reply and say “Well it’s funny that the people, when they say that this is the evidence of the Almighty, always quote beautiful things. They always quote orchids and hummingbirds and butterflies and roses”.
But I always have to think too of a little boy sitting on the banks of a rier in west Africa, who has a worm boring through his eyeball, turning him blind before he’s five years old. And I reply and say “Well presumably the God you speak about created the worm as well”.
And now I find that baffling, to credit a merciful God with that action. And therefore it seems to me safer to show things that I know to be truth, truthful and factual, and allow people to make up their own minds about the moralities of this thing, or indeed the theology of this thing.

I just love it.
New Addition
Posted: Sun 7 November, 2010 Filed under: Animals, Domestic 1 Comment »One of the major birthday occurrences was a new addition to the house.
She’s a silver bengal, and utterly beautiful.
Originally called Wilhemina (from Ugly Betty – beautiful, but a complete bitch) she’s now likely to be called Cricket – she bounces round the bed attacking anything, jumping like a grasshopper. Hence, Cricket. (One could also speculate she’s bats)
Autumnal
Posted: Mon 1 November, 2010 Filed under: Animals, Domestic, Thoughts, Weather Leave a comment »Round here, the leaves on the trees have all suddenly started to change in the last two weeks. It’s something I still find beautiful, and particularly when driving (as I did this weekend) through Thetford Forest, down roads lined with Autumn colours.
It seems weird that Autumn now really isn’t starting ’til October – and that there are still plenty of leaves on the trees while we’re now in November – but that seems to be the way the weather is developing. It’s been like this for a few years now, but still jars with what I remember of Autumn starting in September.
I wonder whether the plants will be affected by these changes. I thought they would be last year, but the harsh winter seems to have re-set their clocks OK. This year though I’ve seen things re-flowering in August/September (the California Lilac of the next-door neighbour is still in bloom now) and I wonder what effect it will have to be flowering and then suddenly be in Autumn / Winter.

London Zoo has a new baby gorilla. Awesome. It might just be enough to make me want to go back to London Zoo.

Sad, but it does make me laugh.
