Gadgets

It’s obviously “Devices Day”, as Pix has just taken delivery of her brand new Digital SLR too. Hope she has fun with it, and it’ll be interesting, seeing what she thinks of the thing.

Poo

Why is it that as soon as you finally get round to ordering a new PC, you find a laptop that you really want too? (via Graybo)

Gah.

At last

Well, last night I ordered the bits for the new PC…

  • Shuttle SK83G box
  • Athlon 64-bit 3400+ processor
  • 1GB PC3200 RAM
  • 16x 16x DVD Dual Layer +/- RW
  • 200Gb Seagate S-ATA hard drive
  • Windows XP Pro 64

At some point I’ll probably end up getting another hard drive as well, but for now 200Gb should be all I need.

And that should do me for a while. The current PC was one of the first 1Ghz athlon chips, so I’ve had it about four years now. As yet I’m unsure what I’ll do with the old one, although I do know I need to completely flatten it once I’ve moved all the relevant data over to the new PC.

Still, that’ll all be a job for next week, once it arrives…

File Incompatibility

Sometimes I wonder if I’m working with techies at all.

“Lyle,Why won’t this file load? It tells me I need to convert it”
“What’s the problem? Just convert it, following the instructions in the error message”
[ goes over to look ]
“It’s an Excel file, I want to open it up, and it won’t let me”
“If it’s an Excel file, why’re you trying to open it in Word?”
“Oh”

Mandrakeiva

A long time ago, I installed Mandrake Linux on my home PC. As a set-up it was OK, but I did make a major fuck-up of the bootloader, where linux was the default install, so you had to choose to go to Windows within the first ten seconds or bang, you were autoloading into Mandrake. Most of the time this didn’t actually bother me, which is why I left it the way it was. After all, the first rule of techies is “if it works (after a fashion) why bother fixing it?”.

Confuzzed

You always know it’s going to be an odd day when you get confused between the mobile phone you’ve left on the desk, and the mouse for the PC.

I’ve just spent time trying to move the arrow on the screen with my mobile. Aaaargh.

Still, could be worse – I could’ve tried answering a call with the mouse…

Wordage

In a fit of truly sad “I wonder…”, observant readers will have noticed that there’s a little wordcount thing over there –>

It probably won’t last long, but I was having a bit of a statisticky moment, having just passed that 3,000th post, so I thought it might be somewhat interesting. Of course, it’s not really, and it’s of no use to anyone except me. But all the same, well, I thought I’d find out.

In other news, I’m now a lot more familiar with some of how WordPress works, so that much-mooted anti-sweary “worksafe” version may just come into being at some point soonish. Maybe. If you’re lucky.
