Dead, not gone

RIP Simon Wiesenthal. “The voice of the Holocaust” indeed – I suspect that there are some old ex-Nazis sleeping safer in their beds tonight, knowing that this man is no longer with us.

Well Done

On a different note, I just wanted to say well done to a friend of mine, Jules, who today completed the Great North Run in 2.25 hours. I’m really pleased she made it, and completed the run successfully – although I’m still sad I didn’t make it up there for the day, but due to being epically disorganised I didn’t get round to trying to book a room ’til WAY too late.

UPDATED : Oops, knew I’d forgotten something when writing this post. Also a huge “well done” to Pix for completing her 17mile hike round the above-ground route of the Circle Line in London. Even better, it was all for a good cause.

Nightwatch

The currently-elusive Dragon wrote about the film “Night Watch” (or “Nochnoy Dozor” in the original Russian) a while back, but it’s soon to be released in the UK.

And I have to say, the trailer looks stunning. Herself will despair of me – she’s not into horror stuff in particular, and vampire gubbins in particular – but this one is definitely on the “must see” list for me.

Redistribution of Mortality

I don’t know if it’s just me in this case, but the news about Gordon Brown announcing a plan to increase the number of vaccinations in Africa and potentially “save 10 million lives” raised a question in my mind.

If they’re saving all these lives, given the current conditions in the area, won’t this just be 10 million more people who have the potential to die from starvation/famine, instead of from measles, polio, hepatitis B, tetanus, and diphtheria?

Or am I missing a point somewhere?

Dying Out

According to one report, the great apes could all be extinct within a generation.

“All of the great apes are listed as either endangered or critically endangered,” co-author Lera Miles from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre near Cambridge told the BBC News website.

“Critically endangered means that their numbers have decreased, or will decrease, by 80% within three generations.”

Wireless

Bloody encrypted wireless networks.

Not that I can say too much about them, as my own one at home is equally encrypted. But at least I know the password to that one. The one here in Norfolk is a little bit more arcane, and I haven’t yet sorted out Airsnort in order to pick up the password. Maybe later.

As it is, I’m on Herself’s Sister’s laptop, which has all the gubbins already set up (and one of the dodgierst H keys known to man) so it’s not too bad. It also means that when I do some work-related stuff (and yes, I still am doing some work-based development) it’s on my own laptop, and thus I can’t get disturbed by the temptation of using the net at the same time. Some would say this is a bad thing, but on occasion it has its uses.

Anyway, we’ve had a good time so far, a day in Norwich, and a visit to the Norfolk Police Gala, which was much the same as every other agricultural show you’ve ever been to – only without animals. That’s it. But it’s been pleasant so far, the weather’s OK, and we’re going to have a good relaxed week.

Just thought you might like to know.

Darwin

Sometimes you just have to wonder what goes through people’s minds. In this case, that of a man who decided to let his 7-year old son drive the car on the M5 motorway – from the passenger seat. Dad had been drinking, but just how much do you have to drink before that seems like a good idea?
