Screw-It-Up Yourself

Now here’s a worrying development…

Last night we put together four IKEA bookcases, plus a corner unit. For the slow, that’s five units altogether. And it took roughly two hours.

What’s more worrying is that everything went together first time, there were no problems, and not one swear word was used. In the annals of self-assembly, particularly in combination with my well-known DIY “skillz”, this is definitely noteworthy.

Agency Contacts

Hmmm, life’s getting interesting again.

Following on from the events of the last few weeks at work, it also seems like there’s been a resurgence of activity from various IT job agencies, and as such I’ve started getting calls from them again. Weird, the way it all works out sometimes, isn’t it?

At the moment I’m not carrying through on anything I’ve been contacted about, but I’ve let them know the current situation, and that I’m certainly interested in what’s around at the moment. But I’m not desperate to move on just yet, I still want to see what will happen with the current place, because I do still believe it could be great. It’s just that all the corporate politics and bollocks is demoralising, and destroying the company from within.

Of course, if something ideal came along then at the moment I’d quite probably take it, but well, the need to move on isn’t that urgent yet. But we’ll just have to see what comes up…

XDA

Well, the new phone arrived yesterday. First impressions? It’s one cool bit of kit.

So far I’ve only moved all the stuff from the old Sony-Ericsson phone to the XDA, and then got it all set up. But yes, there’s one hell of a lot of stuff going on, and it’s going to be fun just sorting through all the things I can do with it. Pity it’s (currently) “only” got Internet Exploder Explorer on , but I’m sure I can get it to run something else as a web browser.

But I do have one question – what the fuck relevance or use does “Mobile Powerpoint” have ?!?

Colours – Again

OK, so I was about right in what I figured, regarding website colours and so on.

As with most things – some people like it, some people hate it, and the majority don’t seem to care one way or t’other. Figures.

However, the experiment between “Worksafe” and “Inverted” wasn’t just about people’s reactions to colour, it was also about which produced less eye-strain after a while using it. My personal preference is still for light text on dark backgrounds, whereas most people seem to prefer dark-on-light. I’d guess that’s down to being used to newsprint, and print in general, with black ink on white/whiteish paper.

I do find that after a solid day of looking at a white background to work on, my eyes can be quite tired. It’s the constant “glare” of a predominantly white screen day in, day out, that seems to have an effect. And on that score, light text on a dark background seems to produce less eye-strain, and less headaches.

But from the look of it, on the commercial things I’m doing, I’m going to have to go with dark-on-light as a preference on the colour schemes. I might put in a colour-switcher similar to d4d™ though, just to give people the option (and, of course, so I can have my preferred light-on-dark scheme for working on the bugger x hours a day!)

As always, any thoughts or responses will be greatfully received…

Organising d4d™

At long last, I’m considering a bit of a revamp on a couple of things in d4d™. When I upgraded from Blogger to WordPress last year (if not late ’04, thinking about it) I moved the main blog part of the site over to CSS and made it all a bit smarter.

However, the older sections got left alone – I never got round to moving the rants and thoughts into the new layout, which was outrageously slack of me at the time, and hasn’t shown any signs of improving since.

As it is, I’m thinking that perhaps I should just copy over the content of those pages of rants, thoughts and photos, and dropping it all into WordPress. Of course, I could also take that opportunity to upgrade to WP2.0 (or 2.0.1, or whatever it is now) at the same time, as the upgrade is sure to leave me swearing anyway. Might as well do it all at once, after all…

Floored

Following on from getting the bathroom suite fitted a couple of weeks ago, Herself has been at home today while the flooring fitters have been to sort out the bathroom and office flooring. And apparently it all looks pretty good.

Of course, I’ll see it when I get home this evening. But it’s going to be good to have carpet etc. again in those rooms, rather than the bare floorboards we’ve had for the last two (or, in the case of the office, three) weeks. In fact, it’ll mean we’re just about done – the office needs a new desk on my side, and we’ll be putting together the bookcases tonight, but it’s actually looking like we’ll have a house again before too long, rather than something that looks like a back-up solution for a box store.

It’s all been worth the effort, but at the same time I’m really looking forward to having all this stuff sorted so we can just have a decent weekend off, for once…

West Wing Season 7

Oh, hallelujah, some sense at last.

On More4, Season Six of West Wing has been on recently. Once it finishes, they’re going straight into Season Seven, which is also the final season. March 10th is the day S7 starts – put it in your diaries!
