Home-Working – A Benefit

One of the things I like about working from home is the freedom, and the peace. When working in an office, I have to listen to other conversations about mind-numbing things like soaps on TV or what super-exciting things they got up to over the weekend.

Working from home, well, I can have whatever I want going on. If I want it quiet, that’s what happens – well, except for the joy of idiot animals wanting in/out of the house. (Although at the time of writing this, Hound is asleep in her basket, twitching and dreaming away)

But it also means that if I want some noise, I can have noise of my choice. And this week, my choice has been to re-watch old episodes of West Wing. It’s been a joy.

Suddenly Missing

When driving, I’ve noticed there’s something I sometimes find quite distracting. It’s when a car suddenly disappears from the rear-view mirror.

It’s happened a few times recently – and OK, I suppose it’s better than having one suddenly disappearing from in front of you, at least. But it really is quite disconcerting to be driving along, knowing what’s in front and behind, then checking the mirror and it’s a completely different vehicle. Most bizarre – and distracting for a good couple of seconds, if nothing else.

Even worse (in my opinion) is when I’ve overtaken someone on a motorway or dual carriageway, then indicate to pull in and the car I’ve just overtaken has disappeared. That’s really distracting (particularly on motorways) and makes me wonder if the car’s in my blind-spot (which, on an estate car is pretty large) before I spot that they’ve also moved over to the first lane.

It’s just weird and distracting, that’s all.

Flying Penguins

I have to say, of all the April Fool’s stories I’ve noticed today, my absolute favourite is the BBC’s “Flying Penguins” story.

The footage in particular has been fantastically done – footage can be seen here on the BBC’s iPlayer until April 7th (There’s also a Youtube link for the same thing)- and it’s made me chuckle. The first couple of shots, particularly as they take off, is so good you start thinking “Really? Fantastic” and then the cynicism kicks in, particularly when you realise that the news has been released on April 1st.

Love it.
