Upgraded

Blimey, that went smoothly. Most unexpected, I have to say. All took less than an hour, which is a lot easier than it was when I was working betwen the 1.0 and 1.5 versions, for example. Colour me impressed.

So, I’m now running on WP2.1, and will see how it all goes from there.

Upgrading

So, the time has finally come.

Over this weekend, I’m going to be upgrading to WordPress 2.1 on D4D™. Yes, I’m nervous about it. Although I’m not going to go the whole hog and re-rationalise everything at the same time, as mooted a while back when I considered removing the older sections of the site ( to a deafening silence and dearth of comments!) but that may well happen over the next couple of months too.

If I’ve been really organised, I’ll have used a trial site in order to check things out and see what it all looks like, getting the templates in order, making sure I don’t end up with a fucked-up abortion of a site for two days.

If I haven’t been organised, then it’s going to look like a dog’s dinner here for a while as I go through and fix the problems as/when they occur.

Should be interesting, if nothing else.

MicroSD

About three weeks ago, I lost the 512Mb MicroSD card that sits in my phone. I didn’t really know where I’d lost it, just that the poxy thing wasn’t there any more.

Fortunately, there wasn’t anything overly important on it – some files that would have been useful to have back, but nothing earth-shattering, and nothing like passwords, site names/logons or anything. So I kind of shrugged my shoulders, thought something along the lines of “Ah Well”, and got on with it.

Anyway, earlier this week I suddenly realised where I had probably lost the card – I’d dropped the phone when I got out of the car at home. All the same, nothing relevant.

But this morning, while bringing the bin back in (Oh, the domesticity) I spotted a little fleck of gold on the driveway. Sure enough, it was the card, still intact – if a little bit soggy. Dried it off, figured I’d got nothing to lose, and slotted it back in the phone. And it still works.

This card has been soaked, frozen, and driven over at least twice a day for three weeks. It’s survived it all. I have to say, I’m quite impressed.

Vista?

So, today Microsoft launches its new Operating System, Vista™. Whoopee-Doo.

Will I be going for Vista™? Hell no – and there’s a few reasons why.

First of all, I’m just not one of those people who simply has to have the latest greatest newest versions. Hell, I only started using XP on my home computers last year. Until then, Windows 2000 had done me very nicely indeed, thank you. In fact, I still don’t like a lot of XPs ‘features’, although I’m getting used to them.

Secondly, as with every other Microsoft OS, the first release will be a bug-fest. It’ll be horrific, and it’ll piss off a lot of people – particularly those who’ve paid to be able to ‘upgrade’ (I use that term *very* loosely!) as soon as Vista is released, and then find that various odds and sods Just Don’t Work. In my opinion, you’re always best to wait ’til at least the first Service Pack has come out, which will fix most of the major bugs. But I also despise the Microsoft attitude where you pay for software, and are still effectively a beta-tester of the OS. That just sucks.

Thirdly, there’s all the DRM (Digital Rights Management) that’s built in to Vista – and that’s something I really object to. In fact, that’s a whole different rant, but basically why the hell should I have limitations on something I’ve bought, and decide I want to listen to on my PC, or MP3 player, or wherever – and why the hell would I buy a piece of software that enforces rights management on items I’ve legally paid for?

So, three good reasons why I have no intention of upgrading to Vista until its absolutely necessary for me to do so. Which, by my reckoning, will be somewhere around 2011.

Reserved Words

On occasion, I really hate SQL. (This is a geeky post. Don’t bother reading on if you’ve no interest in databases or PHP/SQL)

Jesus Loves You

I can’t help but be deeply happy when I see that I’m number one on Google for the phrase

Jesus loves you – everybody else thinks you’re a cunt

I know, it’s SO childish, but when I saw that someone had done a search on it and come to D4D™, I just had to find out where I came on the results…

Developing

Today, my head is completely elsewhere.

In fact, it’s in Geekworld completely. I’m currently developing three websites at the same time, which can get pretty confusing, it has to be said. But it’s going well, so I’m hoping to have made a fair load of progress by the end of the day, and to be pretty much completed on at least two of them by the end of the week. Should be interesting.

And just to make life that little bit more complex, the site list I’m working on doesn’t include the one for my own company, nor the CV. However, as well as the sites I am working on, I’m also working on a framework idea, so that I’ve got all the basic stuff in place for any of the other new sites that’re still on the planning schedule.

Anyway, that’s where my head’s at today. There may be other updates today, but I really wouldn’t count on it!
