Working Hard – Day Two

  • Tiling
  • Grouting
  • Moving stuff around
  • Walking Hound for a good couple of miles
  • Playing with Hound while doing all the other stuff in the house
  • Tidying the garage, so we’ve room for storing stuff
  • Moving 52 packs of tiles
  • And 11 20kg bags of adhesive
  • Putting loads of stuff on the compost
  • And probably a bundle of other stuff as well

For some reason, posts may be light today. Cant think why…

Working Hard

It’s the last weekend before we move in, so today is being spent cutting tiles for the floors – we’ve hired a beast of a machine for cutting them, which definitely makes life a bit easier all round.

As it is, the main tiles for the two bedrooms we’ll be using (one as a bedroom, one as an office) were done a couple of weekends ago, so we’re doing all the tiles now that need to be cut to size – and as Herself has been asked to work this afternoon, we’ll get all the cuts done today, and they’ll be laid tomorrow morning.

I’m home for a quick mid-day break before going back up to the house to do the last few tiles. A break was most definitely necessary – the tile cutter is an absolute beast, I’m covered in tile dust, and my ears are ringing like a bell.

But (as always) at least it feels like we’re getting somewhere.

One Week To Go

This time next week, we’ll be moving to the new house. And about bloody time, too.

The time between completing the purchase and actually moving in has been well spent, though – as detailed previously, there’s been a lot of work done, with workers in and around the house pretty much all the time – if we’d moved in before all this, we’d have been living in a bombsite for the last month, and Hound would be absolutely orbital. So it’s for the best that we’ve delayed moving ’til now.

But at the same time it’s been hard work, and it’s felt like being in limbo. Just about every night, and pretty much every spare moment, we’ve been up at the house dealing with stuff, or organising stuff to happen. It’s been enormously busy, and I can’t deny that I’ll be happy to just be in the place – at least we won’t be having to travel between houses (even though it’s a short distance really, only about five miles each way) every day, and so we’ll have more time to get things done ourselves.

Oh, and more time to walk Hound round the local fields – in that context, we’ll be back to how we were in Bracknell, with the poxy idiot getting taken out pretty much every morning at some ungodly hour before I go to work. On that score, Attleborough is bloody horrible for dog-walking (again, as I’ve said before) with no decent places for a stupid collie to run, without either a) walking for half an hour first to get to the playing field, or b) getting in the car to go past the railway station to the playing field.

From next Friday, though, we’ll be moved in, and will have a field roughly 30 seconds away. (Five seconds, if Hound ever escapes…)

I can’t wait.

Carnival of Workmen

Up at the new house this week, there’s been a real parade of work going on.

By the end of today, the electrics will be all sorted – all the new lights, the new fuseboard, replaced switches, and fittings. The sockets have all been done, fitted properly into the walls. (instead of bizarre extension leads with double sockets on the end) There’s proper cable runs for things like the TV aerial cables so that it all goes in channels in the walls rather than being stapled to the walls. It looks smart.

The fireplace is gone – ripped out last Friday and blocked over – and the blockwork has been plastered over, ready for the wood-burning stove to go in next week. The various bits of wall where the electricians have been working have also been plastered over.

The fencing in the back garden is now done, and is all consistent, rather than suddenly changing from 6′ fence panels to manky plastic latticework. It feels more consistent, more complete, more ours.

The boiler has been serviced, and has been pronounced to be well, healthy, and OK despite not having been serviced for a good couple of years before now. (Another thing the fucking vendors lied about – and that’s a long list, believe me)

We’ve still got some radiators that need moving, and some plumbing odds and sods. We still need to finish off the floor tiles, too. That’s a job for this weekend, and probably next weekend too.

It’s not long now ’til we move in, but things are progressing nicely…

Changed Address

At bloody last, my poxy bank has managed to change my address details.

It’s only taken three weeks.

In other news, the credit cards and so on that I have all managed it instantly, online. Even sending off the driving licence parts to Swansea and getting new updated documents back took less time.

Truly impressive.

Electrical Work

So, today the electrician is starting work on the new house – new lights, new fusebox, new switches, new sockets, the normal gubbins.

At the same time, the guy from EDF Energy is coming to survey the work we want EDF to do in order to move the meters and supply round the corner.

Hopefully this means I can organise it so that electrician shall speak unto electrician, rather than the un-techie me having to act as middle-man in conversations between them.

Regardless, though, it’s another step along the line of getting work done before we move in. Definitely A Good Thing.

Progression

Today, we’re another step along the way to getting the new house at least somewhat sorted before we move in (in two weeks’ time – eek!)

The people installing the wood-burning stove have turned up to do the initial stuff, knocking out the old fireplace and back-boiler, and getting things ready for installing the stove itself a week on Monday.

Yesterday we got the boiler serviced, (and I really must think about sorting out an oil delivery sometime soon) and also got a quote for moving a couple of radiators in the house, which is another couple of jobs off the list.

I’m also sorting out mail redirection today so that it’ll be in place for when we move. All part of the fun and games.

But at least we’re getting there, and should be at least in the vicinity of sorted for the 25th…
