Scar Tissue

One of the things that I hate about the onset of Autumn is the way it makes my scars hurt. I suppose it’s the same as with arthritis, or bunions (not that I suffer from either of those) – but the onset of colder damper weather just makes me hurt.

I’ve got two scars where this really takes effect – one in my right shoulder, and one in my left thumb. The shoulder is more debilitating, leaves me needing to stretch it on regular occasions – and stretch it in strange ways. The thumb is a lesser injury, but still makes the entire knuckle hurt.

The shoulder scar was caused by a big stick with a nail in, wielded one night when I used to run pubs. Burglar alarm went off, Muggins had to go and investigate, and I got a big stick with nails in it for a present. I was lucky really – it caught my shoulder rather than my head. But the nail went in deep enough to jam the joint, and the scar is now about the size of a 50p piece.

The thumb scar is more down to idiocy, and was a bone-deep cut back when I was in school. I won’t bother with the full details, because they’re just idiotic – and idiocy on the part of both myself and A.N.Other. Suffice it to say that I came within microns of cutting the tendon in my thumb, and doing permanent damage. More by luck than judgement I avoided that, but I do still have a permanent reminder of that stupidity.

So yes, when the weather changes I start to ache. And that’s another thing that started to happen over the weekend, as Autumn draws in.

Fitness Thoughts

As things stand, at the moment I’m not fit. I’d like to be fitter, although it’s never been within my goals to be a marathon runner, or anything even similar.

I’m not going to base my weight around some specious target figure from Weightwatchers, or even from BMI charts – when all’s said and done, I’m still 6’3 or so, and have a 50″ chest, with shoulders like a brick shithouse, so I’m simply never going to be 13 stone (83kg, give or take) without multiple amputations. Mind you, without weighing myself, I currently suspect I’m about 22 stone (140kg) which certainly gives me a fair amount of lee-way on what I can lose.

Initially, I’m going to be just using the gym, in order to take off some of the weight before I do anything else. But once that’s done, I hope to be getting back on my bike, and making some use of that too. Mind you, that might not be ’til the new year, or even spring, considering how manky the weather has been of late.

There’s a long way to go yet, but at least I’m getting started on it.

The Start of the Gym

So yes, over the weekend I went back to the gym, and went through the workout plan I’m likely to be doing.

I think the best I can say is that right now, I’m definitely out of shape. I’ll be working it off over the next few months, and that’s going to take some work.

But I’m quite looking forward to it.

I haven’t actually weighed myself, or done any of that guff – and to be honest, I don’t really plan to do so. I might do it, but I’m not going to base anything on that information, so *shrug*. I don’t know – we’ll see.

What I do know is that I need to lose the weight, and I should see the effects of that pretty quickly. That’s the plan, anyway.

Gym Start

About the time this gets published, I’ll be at the gym for the induction guff and first session.

I’m actually looking forward to it – I know that over the last year I’ve put on weight again, so I do want to start working it off again. The gym itself is brand new, and only opened on Sept 1, so it’ll be interesting to see how it’s all come together. (we saw it before it opened, while everything was still getting ready and put together)

Obviously I’m not looking forward to the actual bit where they do the weighing and measuring of my current self, but even that will at least give me some motivation towards losing it again.

I shall post all/any/none of the depressing figures on here later or tomorrow, depending on how I feel about them…

Gym Thoughts

All told, the gym we visited last night looks pretty good. Even better, it’s very local.

Even the membership rates seem sensible/affordable – well, so long as you use the place, of course. If you don’t, then it’s money up the wall, same as any other gym.

But on current evidence, yes, it looks like I’ll be joining up.

Gym Visit

Among other things, this evening I’m having a quick visit at a new gym that’s opening up near us.

Currently I’ve no idea what it’ll be like, and I’m slightly concerned that the manager has said “There’s about ten different pricing plans”, but we’ll just have to see.

I know I need to get back into going to a gym, so it’ll be interesting to see what this one’s got to offer. Otherwise, we’ll be going back to using the local council-funded one who couldn’t find their own arses with both hands and a flashlight when we went there late last year. (And we’ve never darkened the doors since that piss-poor experience)

Insect Food

I don’t know exactly why (other than that it’s something which runs in our family) but in summer, I’m apparently exceptionally tasty to all forms of insect – particularly gnats, mosquitos and bastard horseflies (to give them their proper name) but really any biting bug will have a go at me.

Over the weekend, I got bitten by several of the aforementioned bastard fucking bugs, including one bite on the base of my left thumb. It’s that one that today is causing me real hassle – not least because of course I am left handed.

You see, with me the bites aren’t the only thing. The area round the bite swells up into a solid lump of lymph fluid and gubbins, which makes the entire thing even less fun. And in particular, it’s making the entire of the base of my left hand (i.e. the thumb and wrist area) really stiff and painful.

It’ll wear off after a day or so, but right now it’s driving me utterly fucking bananas.
