Laptop

The new laptop? It’s a Dell Inspiron 640m. Nothing special, nothing cutting edge (well, except for the fact it’s got a Centrino Duo™ Dual Core processor, which is pretty new) but it’s fairly lightweight, has a decent 14″ screen, and what looks to be about 7 hours of battery life, which is what I wanted.

When all’s said and done, the laptop will be used primarily while I’m travelling and/or away from home, so the battery life was the driving factor more than anything. It’s definitely got the oomp and processing power too, along with a very nice 1Gb of RAM, so it should do for the next couple of years at least.

I’ve spent the last couple of days putting on all the stuff I need on it, and now I’m pretty much sorted. Good, innit?

Quittin’ Time

I’m “working” from home for the next couple of days, and Friday is my last ever day in the office. I can’t believe that it’s all gone as well as it has. Well, in a way I’m not at all surprised, because I still believe that a major part of the motivation for the office move was to get rid of all the people who were based around Bracknell – so in that way I guess they were probably quite pleased for the scheme to have worked.

Really though I’m just pleased it’s gone so smoothly. In honesty I didn’t really expect it to do so – I was expecting a fight, particularly on whether I’d have to work my month’s notice or not, but instead it’s all come through easily.

So now I’ve got one more day left in the office – and even that is more about meeting some of the people from work for a few drinks at lunchtime, then crawling my way home.

I’m just looking forward to finishing. And then moving on to the new job in Cambridge. One day left of dealing with Arsehole Boss, and I’m done. I’ll be counting the minutes…

Off, Off and Away

So, amazingly it all went OK.

A simple – and non-sweary – explanation of why my position with the company was now untenable, making clear references to a lot of policies that amount to nothing less than constructive dismissal, and referring to legal advice I’d taken over the last week, and bang, I’m done.

I come back into the office on Friday to sort out some final things. I’ve also been asked to do a couple of small things for the company over the next couple of weeks (although they depend on Arsehole Boss not being an Arsehole, so it’s not certain I’ll even have to do them) which is fine – it means I get paid for the entire of September, and then also get a month’s pay in lieu of notice, and a month’s pay as a severance deal.

All told, I come out of the entire thing Golden, and smelling of Roses.

Can’t be bad.

Expensive

Yesterday was – how shall I put this – fucking expensive. Well, if I’m honest, the money had already been spent – it was just that yesterday turned out to be the day when it all arrived. So I kind of look at it that it’s only expensive once you’ve received it. Strange, but true.

So anyway, last week I’d ordered some new Cat® boots through Schuh, and because of going back into the contracting game, it was decided that a new laptop was on the cards, the old Libretto now being a) fucking noisy, b) awesomely slow, and c) just not really up to scratch. Still sexy as fuck, and with great battery life, etc., but well, just not up to the job and definitely not up to the constant travelling. In fairness, it’s five (if not six) years old, and has served me damn well in that time. But still, it was time for an upgrade.

Both items arrived yesterday, so that’s near enough £1000 of stuff that’s come through the door today. When you take into account the other odds and sods that arrived for Herself as well, we’re well over that mark. And there’s still another delivery due, and I know Amazon have also sent out the Season 7 box set of West Wing too, although that probably won’t arrive ’til today. Cunts.

But it did mean that I could spend yesterday “working from home” and setting up the new laptop with all the standard stuff I need. And when it comes to setting up Firefox on a new computer now, may I take this opportunity to heartily recommend Google’s “browser sync” extension for Firefox which makes the entire process seriously painless. Yeah, I know, it means that somewhere in Google’s servers there exists a complete and comprehensive list of all my bookmarks etc., but frankly, when it means migrating everything is a matter of two or three mouseclicks, I don’t care.

Google may be Evil, but it’s also Fucking Useful.

Walking Away

Well, the time has come.

I’ve requested a meeting with the CEO of the company, and the main accounting guy, today, so I can sort out leaving. I haven’t actually said I’m leaving, but I’m sure they’ll figure it out for themselves between now and then.

I don’t yet know what time the meeting will be, but it’s going to be sometime today. And over the weekend, I got to write a resignation letter too. That was fun.

Of course, there have also been to be a couple of “wish I could send this” versions first. But the actual one is still quite fun, as it’s made ample use of phrases like “constructive dismissal”, “untenable position” and “having taken legal advice”.

UPDATED : Arse. Meeting postponed ’til tomorrow. Still, it’ll be fun when it happens. And of course a celebratory D4D™ post will be added when it’s happened.

Travelling to Work

Bleh. I’ve just been looking at the ways I’m going to be getting to the new job in Cambridge, and all I can say is “Bleh”.

Because of the way we’re doing things initially, I’m going to be travelling up to Cambridge on the Monday morning, staying there ’til Friday, then coming home for the weekend. Luckily, the new job is very cool and understanding about that kind of thing, and they’ve no problem with it. Besides, they know I’m going to be working more than 9-5 on the days when I am there, as there’s no constraint on me having to be back home, etc. etc.

Anyway, looks like I’m going to be awake horrifically early on a Monday morning, as I’m going to be on a 7am train in order to get to Cambridge for about 10am. Blech.

And, of course, Hound will need to be taken out before I get the chance to have anything respectable like breakfast or owt. That’s the joys of setting up a routine – she then doesn’t understand that just because I’m awake earlier, the routine should change too. So it’ll be getting up, taking her out, then having breakfast before getting to the station. *shudder

Ah well. Could be worse. And at least I’ll be getting paid back the £66 it’ll cost me…

Success 2

Oh, and in Other News, Herself has now also been offered a job up Norfolk way. Slightly more than she’s on now, and a place she seems happy with.

So it’s all coming together very successfully now. And about bloody time too!
