Power Watching

One of the things we got during the Festering Season was an OWL Electricity Monitor as part of our “Good Life” way of life. Yes, as BW said, it was £50 for the kit, but well, we’ll see how much it saves us.

Installation of the kit was remarkably simple – particularly bearing in mind that I’m really quite useless on these things, and that it involves putting the sensor around the live supply to the electricity meter, it was still easy to do, and took less than ten minutes all told.

Calibration and set-up took a little longer, but I’d say that everything was set up (except the actual electricity price, as I can’t find the supply price for our new account at the moment, which is fucking annoying) within half an hour.

It’ll take some getting used to, and a little bit of time to understand what’s actually being reported – but it basically monitors electricity usage through the day, so you can see how much is being used, particularly when everything is “off”. (i.e. left in standby, or with things plugged in but unconnected – phone chargers, I’m looking at you here) It also displays that data in terms of carbon emissions, either in kg per hour or tonnes per year, and the amount that the current load is costing you in pence per hour.

In non-electrical data, you also get to see the current temperature in the room where the monitor is sitting, and the humidity. I’m not quite sure of the use of those bits of information – although I guess that the temperature part at least is going to be useful to compare with the thermostat, so we can see if they produce the same results.

’twas

Bah, HumbugAnd that’s it. Done for another year. All I can say is “Thank chuff for that“.

I do have some ideas for next year, and the 2008 Festering Season may just be improved by use of Scroogians.com – if only I could think of what to do with it. I bought it a year ago, and have been completely stumped since then.

I did think that it could be used as a sort of “No fecking Christmas crap ’til December” thing, or maybe just a bunch where people could say Humbug together. But I just don’t know.

All suggestions will be received and/or considered.

Dark Knight

Herself has already called me a sad fucker for this, but I have to agree with Tom – the new trailer for “The Dark Knight” (AKA the new Batman film) looks bloody great.

Bad Behavio(u)r Upgrade

If you’re running Bad Behavio(u)r on your website (as I am) you may find that you’ve been blocked from commenting on your own site (or anyone else’s) today.

It’s a problem with Bad Behavior – and there’s an update out to fix it. (And this is a direct link to the file.) Download it, unzip it, and put the bad-behaviour folder into your site’s wordpress folder in /wp-content/plugins .

And lo, job done and all fixed again.

From the Bad Behaviour blog:

Some people have asked for more details on what exactly happened. In brief, yesterday I moved all of my sites to a new dedicated server. In the process, I decommissioned an old blacklist I was running which I thought wasn’t being used, not realizing that Bad Behavior was still set to use it. Shortly afterward, I found myself locked out of my own blog, just as you all did. So therefore, this release.

Micro-CMS

Note : This is likely to be a very geeky post. If you’re not interested in CMSs, .htaccess and/or Apache (or don’t understand what I’m saying there) then don’t bother clicking on the <more> link…

Cold-Induced Fuckwittery

How to tell I’m still not completely well:

This morning at work, I changed my password. It’d been nagging me since last week to do so, so I finally got round to doing it. “Ah, that’ll be a good one”, I thought.

Normally, as soon as I’ve changed my password I can remember it no worries. I might type the old one a couple of times in different areas by mistake, but by lunchtime the new one will be second nature.

Today? I’ve had to pause and rethink what I decided on at least three times. In fact, I’ve even had to write it down so I can remember it. I’ll get there, for sure, but right now well, my brain is definitely not quite as on-planet as it should be. Hey Ho.

Virus Aquarium

I don’t often link to this kind of thing, but this cartoon on XKCD made me laugh.

Enjoy.
