Practicality

Over the weekend, we got a lot of small (but necessary) jobs done, some of which I found to be really quite satisfying. It has to be said, I’m about as practical as a teapot made of salt, so it’s been good to have done some practical “DIYish” tasks that’ve gone smoothly, and had good results, rather than my normal disastrous attempts.

One example of this was that we put the rotary washing-line thing back in the garden. And this time we used a different base, so it went in straight. I don’t know how, but the first time I’d done it with one of those poxy ground-spear things, it’d gone in straight up ’til about halfway in- I know it had, I’d checked it with a spirit level – but by the time it was all the way in, it was angled at about 30° Not ideal, as you can imagine – and it also meant I bore a certain amount of piss-taking about the entire thing being utterly skew-whiff.

The new base we got was one that screwed in to the ground – much easier to do, until the last couple of revolutions, at which point it became quite tough, and the supplied lever wasn’t really up to the job. Still, application of another length of steel through the handle rectified that – if there’s one thing I do understand when it comes to DIY, it’s what leverage and/or fulcrums can do.

Secondly – and this was something that I hadn’t previously screwed up – was the installation of two more water-butts, along with downpipe-diverters, so that water coming down the drainpipe from the guttering gets diverted into the water-butt, until it’s full and then it goes back down the drain. All very clever, I’m sure. Thankfully I didn’t design the bloody things, I just fitted them.

And it was remarkably simple. Worryingly so, in fact – which meant that neither I nor herself actually trusted them to be done correctly until we’d emptied a two-litre bottle of water into each gutter. But lo, they worked perfectly first time.

Even more satisfyingly, having installed them on the Saturday morning, when I checked them on the Sunday following the rainy Saturday night, the butts were full. 100L in 24 hours. Not bad at all. Even if it does mean we’ve now had to buy some more, and they’ll be getting connected together to the current ones once they arrive.

Domestic Overload

Over the last couple of months, D4D™ has become a bit boring, I’m afraid. It’s primarily due to the fact that most of my waking (Yes, that’s waking – dirty-minded bastards) hours are currently occupied with either work or the new house, along with the odd side-track off into photography and/or introspection.

I definitely will be returning to the world of random outspouts, but well, not just yet. Sorry about that.

For now though. I’m aware of the issue, and looking into it. Normal service will resume as soon as possible. Probably. Before that, though, there still may be a couple of ‘before and after’ shots of the house. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Decorative

We managed to paint the next bedroom completely over the weekend. Initially it had been done with one wall in navy blue, and three in manky lilac, which meant that first of all we needed to do two coats of white (“one coat” is – to be honest – a fucking lie) to set up a decent base, and then two coats of the paint we’d chosen (One by Crown, called ‘Crochet’, not that anyone cares) and all’s now done.

All told it looks pretty good. We need to do the white glosswork still, which is tonight’s job. And then we get the new bed, matress and bedside furniture on Tuesday afternoon.

This way, we’ll now have space for guests – fortuitous, when you consider we’ve got the out-laws staying here this weekend…

The Good Life

Thankfully, it’s not just me who’s ended up taking on too much work this year – Herself did much the same thing.

Because of the time delays in the house purchase, a lot of the plants that had been started off at the old place either didn’t make it into the ground in time to be useful this year, or everything went in at once (particularly with regard to the stuff in the veg patch) so we’ve ended up letting a lot of it go over. Not intentionally, but just with so much other stuff going on, the veg patch ended up coming last on the list.

As a result, we spent some of last weekend just pulling up a lot of the stuff that’d gone over, or even died, and sticking it on the compost heaps. It’s a bit sad to see stuff just going on the heap, but in this case it was the only valid option. And I suppose it’ll have the side effect of making for decent compost for the new year.

And at least we know for sure that the ground there is fertile and decent, which means that next year we’ll be able to get a lot of decent stuff done. We’ll spend a bit more time planning it though, and hopefully by then we’ll have a fair amount more disposable time where we can do the garden stuff, rather than trying to mix it in with all the house work, moving, painting, tiling, work co-ordination and the like.

House Progress

There’s been a fair amount of progress this week on the house as well, thank God. It’s been a mentally busy week all round, so it’s good that we’ve also got stuff done domestically. Most of it’s been done by Herself, while she’s between jobs, and it’s looking good.

As it is, she has / we have :

  • Painted the living room (2 coats)
  • Cut all the remaining tiles for the living room floor (about 40, all told)
  • Laid the tiles
  • Finally got a start date from EDF for the moving of the power supply coming to the house (not much of a move, but still cost £400)
  • Stripped off the (truly nasty) border in the office, and painted the walls
  • Sorted out a plumber to come and move radiators etc.
  • Got new blinds installed in all the rooms at the front of the house

I’m sure there’s some other things as well, but right now I just can’t remember them. But then, I’m crap – as we all well know.

Productive

On the subject of ‘Doing not Talking’, it’s probably worth also pointing out that I’ve written a complete site this weekend for one client. They’d set a ridiculous deadline, due to business needs, and I’ve managed to fulfil it.

Yes, it still needs some work, but the basics are all done, and it’s looking good. Which is bloody marvellous.

Of course, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without a major dose of tolerance and understanding from Herself, who’s been busy with house stuff. And things would’ve been more fraught than they were if the tossers at HSS had actually supplied a working tile-cutter.

Still, the tile cutting is now next weekend’s job. Joy. But at least I won’t have a website to be writing at the same time. (I hope)

Billing 2

And wouldn’t you just know it, two days after writing about not getting bills, the electrician’s bill arrived on the doorstep.

There is such a thing as tempting fate, obviously…
