One of the things that particularly annoys me is when I’ve decided to have a ‘lazy’ day on the train, and rather than work during my commute, read a book instead. OK, that’s not the annoying part.
The annoying part is when I finish the book on the outward journey, and then have nothing to read on the way home. Which means I end up working. (or at least doing something on the laptop that vaguely resembles work)
Guess what happened today? Yup.

I forgot to say earlier, but today my car is in the garage.
It’s recently gone over the 60,000 miles – which means I’ve done just under 4,000 in the poxy thing already – so it was time for what Ford term “a major service”. I’ve no idea what that entails, but it’s about £225 to do.
As it is, I’m faintly optimistic that that’s all I’ll have to pay – I haven’t had any calls saying “Oooh, we found that the kajoogly sprocket is nearly frubscotched, that’s gonna cost you £xxx” (or words to that effect, anyway).
Still, I’ll know more when I get there at about 5:15…

So, that’s @Media done with (for me) for another year, and I’m off back to deepest darkest Norfolk.
More thoughts will follow…

Over the last few weeks, my internet access has been – how shall we say? – “interesting”.
Not only did I end up on dial-up for a week after moving house (along with epic levels of sweary words), but while I’ve been in London the access has been decidedly patchy too.
@Media made the – very smart, in my opinion – decision to not have wifi access in the rooms. It sounds weird to not have internet access at a web conference, but it’s brought about an impressive reduction in the number of people surfing, answering emails, and generally eFuckingAbout while presentations are going on. And that’s a good thing – it’s meant that more attention has been focussed on-stage, and there’s also less distraction in the audience – it’s hard to concentrate on what someone onstage is saying when the person in front/behind/next to you is belting away on a manky clicky keyboard.
But the hotel I’ve been using is supposed to have wi-fi – it’s extra, and supplied by Spectrum Internet. And for the last two days it’s been about as stable as Charles Manson on LSD.
So all told the internet access has been pretty ropy while I’ve been here. No bad thing in some ways, but it does mean I’ve not been able to get a fair amount of web-based work done. Ah well, that’s what weekends are for, apparently.

A couple of weeks back, because of moving and so on, I shoved a safety razor in a pocket in my bag, so that if/when I got too stubbly, I could have a quick shave when I got in to work, and look at least vaguely human.
I then forgot about it.
Last night, on the train, I was looking for my headphones and shoved my hand into the pocket on my bag. Suddenly, I remembered the safety razor in there. But only after I’d managed to shave a layer off the pad of my little finger, which is now suspiciously flat.
It bled like a bastard, unsurprisingly, but is all OK, except for being extremely painful on occasion. It’s got a poxy big plaster over it, so it’s safe, but does get knocked all the time. And just before going to @Media tomorrow, as well. Typical.
My name’s Lyle, and I can be a right twonk sometimes.

And just to top things off, this morning I didn’t take into account that we now live about four miles further away from the train station than we did on Friday.
So I left ‘on time’ and got to the train station late – just missed it by a couple of minutes.
Which means that today I’ve ended up driving in to work. Not great, but it does mean I got here pretty much still on time (depending on the time of day, the train journey and car journey take pretty much the same time, roughly an hour each way) and just have to sort out where to park. Still, could be worse.
And it also meant I got in to work at just about the time I’d have been catching the next train to Cambridge, and would then still have had an hour to travel, so *shrug*
But I’ll remember to readjust my timings tomorrow, you can be sure…

On my commute to and from Cambridge, there’s a field where I’m sure they’re just cultivating thistles. Whole big dead straight rows across the entire field, and the only things apparently growing in those fields are 2-foot-high thistles.
It looks very odd.
