Technical

There’s a large amount of moving files from Old PC to New PC, and finishing off installing all the crap that I regularly use, while managing to not move over all the stuff I no longer use (for instance, DreamWeaver).
Of course, the basics were already sorted, and probably were within 24 hours of getting New PC up and running. But now it’s all the other stuff. Oh, and installing another Gb of RAM, and the new PCI wireless card.
Alongside that, there’s a whole shitload of music to move from old to new, as well as something like 15Gb of photos. It’s not going to be a quick process.
Oh, and finalising the stuff for a nother website that’s starting to go live during the next week.
And FTPing to the new PC all the website files for the other cough websites that I’ve worked on, created, and/or continue to work on. Which as well as everything else is an exercise in remembering passwords. Fun fun fun, although SnadBoy‘s “Revelation” is fucking fantastic on that score.
PC

I’ve since written to Shuttle, and heard fuck all, and written to Micro-Direct (who I bought it from) who have responded with “Not our problem.”
Anyway, on Tuesday I ordered a new PC from Dell, of all places. Not a world-shaking bit of kit, but not bad either – 3.0Ghz dual core processor, 2Gb RAM, blah, blah, blah – and of course I can then also shove in the RAM I got for the shuttle box, plus the DVD writer, and up the score with it even more.
So I ordered it on Tuesday. And it arrived today.
Not bad service at all – of course, we still have to check it’s all a) there, and b) working. But that’s the work for tonight, and then migrating stuff over the weekend. Oh goody…

Today, for example, as if it wasn’t enough to be wading through a whole bundle of stuff and ideas to do with various sites, I also have to end up going and getting another one because of an idea from Friday that seems to have frown grown legs and already started running.
Aarrgh!
I need to stop having ideas – just for a while, so I can catch up with the ones I’ve already got…

I’m going to be at @Media 2006, which means I’ll be leaving Bracknell at about 7am each day in order to get there in time. So posts may just be a little bit lacking.
I’ll write more on Saturday, once my brain’s done all the necessary processing, and catching up on sleep etc.
Drivers

The network card I had to put in to my work PC this week was a case in point – surely there can’t be that much of a price difference between a floppy disc and a mini-CD for the drivers?
Upcoming Changes
Posted: Tue 13 June, 2006 | Author: Lyle | Filed under: Domestic, Getting Organised, Own Business, Work-related | 4 Comments »While we were away, we did a lot of thinking, and some planning, and really just figured out some stuff. All good, and all very positive. It’s going to take some work, for the most part, but at least we feel like we’re getting somewhere again.
So – the big change is going to be that we’re definitely moving to Norfolk. Or at least East Anglia. But Norfolk’s the ideal. It won’t happen just yet – there’s things to do first, like sorting out some work, and also doing the final pieces to the house, so we can sell it easily when the time comes.
But at least the decision has been made, and hopefully it can all now start coming together properly.
I’m sure I’ll write a lot more about this, and some of the plans and ideas over the next couple of weeks, but for now, well, we’re just getting started on it all.
Inland Revenue
Posted: Mon 12 June, 2006 | Author: Lyle | Filed under: Customer Services, Cynicism, Domestic, Own Business, Sweary, Work-related | Leave a comment »Finally, it looks like my ongoing fight with the Inland Revenue may just be coming to a close.
Way back in March last year, I got a snotty letter from the Inland Revenue telling me that my tax return for 2003/4 was now officially late, and I was being slapped with a penalty fine of £100 as a result. OK, fine – except, well, I hadn’t actually received a tax return for 2003/4. I called them immediately, and told them so. “We’ll send one out, and put the account on hold” they said.
Did they fuck as like.
In May I got another demand – it was still late, another £100 had been thrown at me, and I still hadn’t received the bloody tax return in the first place. Another call, another promise, and finally a tax return arrived. I filled it in, enclosed all the shit they asked for (P45, P60, blah blah) and sent it back. Like a numpty, I didn’t send it recorded delivery.
Yes, Inland Revenue lost it. Along with all the documents. Oh shit.
Everything’s gone on from there, really. Two more returns (one lost, one finally received), shitloads of demands for money, invoices, the lot. Oh, and a similar scenario for the 2004/5 one, which started happening this year, to a disturbingly similar pattern.
Finally it’s all looking like it’s been sorted. It turns out that a company I was a director of, and left back in August ’04, hadn’t told Inland Revenue I’d left. (and had earned fuck-all with) So Inland Revenue thought I was still self-employed, and getting money from the company. Except I’d left them, and told Companies House so as well. Your standard “linked up government” *cough* scenario. I got a return for 2005/6 as well, but it now looks like common sense may have taken hold, and I won’t have to fill it in. That’s getting verified today, as you can imagine. I want that decision in writing. Ideally in 48point bold, with flashing lights.
And the final amount? After two years of stress, hassle, threats of court, (Well, being told the day before the court date “Oh, you’re supposed to be in court tomorrow”. I’m sure there’s some kind of statutory requirement to fucking tell me that? “Oh, we sent out a letter”. In a similar way to the other ones that I haven’t received? “Oh.”) threats of bailiffs and tax inspectors?
£150
That’s it. One hundred and fifty sodding pounds. It’s cost more than that, just in administration at their end. Hell, it’s cost me a bundle just in phone calls and postage. Pity I can’t count that against the payment.
Still, the cheque goes off today, and hopefully that’ll be the end of it…
