Which Deal ?

Being a tad addicted (still) to that Tropicana Orange and Lime juice at the moment, I’m aware of which supermarkets have it on special offer at the moment. It’s odd, it always seems to be on some kind of “deal”.

Anyway, at the moment

  • Supermarket One has it at 2 for £3
  • Supermarket Two has it on 3 for £5.

I found it interesting, because Supermarket Two’s offer instinctively looks like a better deal. And I don’t know why.

Logically, Supermarket One is actually the better deal. But I had to think about it to be sure.

What do you think? Which one looks the better offer?  (I know which one is the better one, obviously – I’m interested in perceptions rather than fact)

There’s an app for that !

The first thing I did was a division sum! I find it incredibly sad that there is (need of) an app for that…

    I think Supermarket 1 is Sainsbury’s and 2 Morrison’s? Well, it was last time I looked…

Unfortunately, my local Sainsbury’s is too small to stock that variety (which is also my favourite). Apparently you have to have a minimum daily turnover of £220,000 for “minority flavours”.

Yeah, I did the same thing – worked it out in my head. I think the “app for that” though is a calculator. I’d hope so, anyway. I was just interested in the immediate perception of the offer, rather than working it out though – to me “3 for £5” seems to be a better offer than “2 for £3”.

    S1 is Sainsbury’s, yes.
    S2 is the dreaded Te$co.

Mind you, S1 has now changed the offer to the same thing – 3 for £5.

Actually there genuinely is an app for that

I think you put in number of units – quantity in each unit and price

A good example is comparing (for example) lager prices when one brand is a 440ml and the other is 500ml

Oh right, fair enough, I didn’t know that.

What annoys me is when two pack sizes of the same product aren’t easily compared and sometimes it requires quite complicated mental arithmetic to see which one is cheaper. The small print on the shelf will give ‘pack price’ for one and ‘price per 100g’ for the other, so it’s no help.

I’m afraid that I thought the first deal was the better, but I do a lot of mental arithmetic.

Getting cheaper – depsite 2.1p VAT increase on every pound… two for £2.60 at Lidl currently. Only the standard orange flavours, plus golden grapefruit though (I only went in to get lemons…).
