During this week, I’ve done some rationalisation/reduction of my blogroll (the links over there -> on the right) to get rid of ones that either I no longer read or they no longer write.
As such, the list of links has been reduced, but it needed to be done. Some of the ones I’ve now deleted hadn’t been updated in at least a year, so I figured it was time they went.
Still, at least the ones that remain are the ones I use on a regular basis…

Every so often, I realise just how bad I can be at Maths. Today (and, in fairness, last night) were perfect examples of that.
I’ve been writing the PHP to do a bundle of reports, and one of them involved figuring out the return-on-investment (ROI) for a given contract. It’s a simple percentage, yet could I get it right first time? Could I knickers. OK, some of the problems were with getting the information out of the database in the first place as well, but all the same, it led to me bashing my head into the desk for a good hour just on getting the sums right and then the percentages.
And the real bummer is that I’m still not convinced I’ve got it right…
Updated : Ah, got it sussed now, and all seems to be working fine. Funny how the simple things are always the hardest to fix, isn’t it?

One of the ongoing projects we’re working on at the moment is (as Gordon did a while back) ripping all our old CDs onto the PC.
It’s not a quick process – well, it’s not bad, but it’s not super-speedy either- but it’s something that needs to be done. Among other things, it’ll free up some space, mean we can store the CDs somewhere else, and still have access to the music.
However, it does also mean I need yet another new hard-drive. I never did get round to getting another internal hard-drive for the main PC, although I did get the big external one a while back which has been great for backups and the like.
As it is, I’m most likely going to end up getting something of around 750Gb in size. There’s a lot of music still to be ripped, but also it can be used for photography stuff, and all the other projects I invariably have on the go. Plus well, it makes sense to get something with more storage, rather than less.

Today I got an email about the 2008 @Media conference in London at the end of May. Normally, I’d be there like a shot – in fact, I was well on my way to booking a ticket, particularly as it was £355 today (for today only) against the full price of £495. (although until mid-March it’s an ‘early bird’ price of £395 or so)
But there was something nagging me about those dates, 29-30 May. Something… So I checked the calendar. And it turns out it’s lucky I did, because on the 30th we’re going over to Wales before travelling to Ireland the next day.
So it’s good that I didn’t book the place before remembering about the holiday – but it’s still a bummer that I’m going to miss this year’s @Media conference.

Following on from yesterday’s loss of USB stick, we found it today.
In the washing machine.
Thank the lord for solid-state technology, which just shrugs off things like getting washed. It’s dried out,
I’ve just put it in the laptop, and all’s fine, the entire thing is working well.
Happy Day.

One of the things about working in at least two offices on any given week is that I do tend to carry a lot of current stuff around on a USB Stick (Memory Stick, Pen Drive, whatever) so that I’ve got the information where/when I need it.
Fortunately, it’s all encrypted – and for a good reason. Basically, I find that while they’re really convenient to use, I occasionally lose or mislay them.
It’s happened again today. I know the damn’ thing is in the house somewhere. However, ‘somewhere’ is the operative word. I’ve already checked the places where it should be, so it’s definitely somewhere else. The only real concern is that it may have been in a pile of papers which went in the recycling bin, which will have been collected today.
All told, it’s a pain. There’s nothing that I don’t have backed-up, and in multiple other locations. It’s just a pain for the moment. With luck I’ll find it when I get home. Otherwise, it might turn up in a month’s time. Or maybe never. There are at least two silver ones that I had back in Bracknell, and have never been seen since.
Maybe I should attach the drive to my keys or something – but then it just becomes more of a pain to use the stick. I don’t know, I’ll think of something, I’m sure.

Busy, working at home. Client sites to get sorted before deadlines kick in, and doing last minute fixes to problems that occurred to me at 3am.
Aaaargh.
Still, it’ll all calm down again in a bit. Won’t it?
