Trust

It’s no bad thing, to be honest, and I do take it as one hell of a compliment to be trusted with things like that. Quite honestly, it’s pretty cool.
And then some other people think I’m hard to get on with. Can’t imagine what would give them that impression. *cough*
Self-Inflicted Overload
Posted: Sun 6 May, 2007 | Author: Lyle | Filed under: Own Business, Work-related | Leave a comment »Not content with all the other stuff that’s currently going on in my workload, I’m now also considering a revamp of the website I use for the work side of my life. The photography portfolio (which is nominally linked to it) is similar in ‘design’, but is lightyears ahead in terms of back-end and technological stuff.
And it occurred to me this week that actually, I haven’t updated it properly in a while, that I need to add in the most recent clients etc., and it started me thinking about what I should do with it, as well as whether the work would actually have any perceivable improvements to anyone except me. Would there be any real return on the investment I put on it? (Oh God, I’ve been working in marketing departments too long, I’m starting to think about Return On Investment (ROI))
Alongside that, I need to sort out a new bank account for the business stuff. Most of the work at the moment is going through Parasol, so all the tax and NI stuff is paid already, but there’s more private stuff coming in again, so it’s looking more and more likely that I need to do a ‘proper’ account for it as well. That’s a task for the next few weeks, though – it’s not urgent. (Yet)
Inspiration At Last
Posted: Fri 4 May, 2007 | Author: Lyle | Filed under: Customer Services, Cynicism, Geeky, Work-related | 2 Comments »Ah, it always comes in the end. This time it was in the form of a letter from a scumbag agency I had the misfortune to register with while down in Bracknell, wanting to move on from CrapCo. Yeah, that long ago.
Bear in mind that since registering with them, I’ve now had two other jobs, and have moved from Berkshire to Norfolk. Which Scumbag Agency knows about, because I’ve told them. Repeatedly, and at great length.
And today? An email about Java developer positions in – wait for it – London, Exeter, and Southampton. I’ve never been a Java programmer- never wanted to be, never will be. Not my thing at all.
Fucking idiots. And I’ve told them that, too. Twunts.
Three-Day

It means I might actually get oooh, at least one day off. Maybe. If I’m lucky.
Pronunciation
Posted: Wed 2 May, 2007 | Author: Lyle | Filed under: Cynicism, Thoughts, Work-related | 5 Comments »One of the things that is just about guaranteed to drive me bananas is people mispronouncing words- and another is verbal tics that are used every sentence or two. One of the people I deal with on a regular basis does both of these things all the time – and, if I’m honest, it probably also doesn’t help that I really don’t like this person all that much for a variety of reasons that I can’t be chuffed to go into.
So every time she wants to say ‘specific’ or ‘specifically’, instead she says ‘pacific’. It’s not a difficult word to pronounce, is it? (Apparently, it is – Herself also does this one, so you’d think I’d be used to it by now. But oh no, not at all.) At least every other sentence starts with ‘Basically’, and every three or four is concluded with ‘Jergetwharramean?’ After a couple of hours, I’m chewing the walls.
The one that amuses me (at the same time as still making me want to kill) is ‘Divole publishing’. Considering that this person works in the realm of content management systems – and is involved in trying to sell them to clients – you’d think that she’d know that the term is actually ‘Devolved Publishing‘, where whole groups of people are involved in the writing and publishing of web content, rather than it just being within the remit of one or two people within an organisation.
As it is, I only have to deal with this particular person every few weeks – which I can only see as a good thing. I think if I were to deal with them on a regular basis, I’d be in serious trouble with the law…
And before anyone mentions ‘pot, kettle and black’, I know that I have plenty of my own verbal tics- I suspect everyone does- but at least I make sure that mine don’t involve mispronunciation, or using words entirely out of context. Let alone making them up out of thin air. ‘Divole’ indeed.
@Media 2007
Posted: Tue 1 May, 2007 | Author: Lyle | Filed under: @Media2007, Own Business, Work-related | 3 Comments »In just over a month, the 2007 @Media conference is going to be on.
And, thankfully, I’m going to be there. Happy day.
I haven’t yet worked out the timescales for going, and how it’ll all work out, and/or whether I stay in London overnight. That’s stuff for the next few days, I guess.
Whatever the decisions on that score, well, I’m still going to be at @Media. And that’s the important thing.
