AutoGlass

Not in the field of view, thankfully – but still serious enough that she could hear it continuing to crack as she drove. So out came the insurance, and out came AutoGlass to replace the entire screen.
Only when they did it, the replacement screen had a poxy great scratch acrosss the field of view. So it needed another replacement.
That’s been done today. I’ve driven Herself’s car to my workplace, and Autoglass have come here to fix it, under warranty, and thus at no extra charge.
It’s all done – they came an hour ago, and it’s all sorted. And much as the first replacement was a bit of a bodge, I can’t help but be slightly impressed at how smoothly the entire thing’s gone – it could’ve been so much worse.
Heavy

When I got to work, I opened the boot, and realised why. There’s 360 litres of bark-chip still there – I’d been over and bought it yesterday, then left it in the car and forgotten about it.
I’ve no idea what the weight of it all is, but it’s considerable!
GPS Question
Posted: Thu 10 April, 2008 Filed under: Cynicism, Driving, Thoughts, Weirdness 7 Comments »A question for those of you who have a GPS system.
Where do you put it in the car?
By which I mean where on the windscreen, of course.
When I’m using it, the GPS/Satnav goes down on the bottom right-hand corner of the window. There I can see it without having to take my eyes too far off the road, and it doesn’t obstruct my view. To me that makes sense.
However, I notice that a lot of people seem to put the SatNav in the bottom middle of the windscreen, directly above the centre console of the dashboard. To me this just seems like a really awkward place, causing you to move your eyes right away from the road, and also blocking the view of a certain bit of road.
So I’m just wondering what other people who read this do.
New Wheel
Posted: Sun 6 April, 2008 Filed under: Domestic, Driving 1 Comment »About two months ago, I whacked the car into a pot-hole, hard enough to knock the wheel-cover off. It went straight back on, but I knew I’d dented the rim of the wheel as well.
Since then (and bear in mind, this is before we went up to the Lake District) the steering vibrates when I’m on motorways (i.e. something over about 60-65mph) so I thought that the pot-hole had knocked the wheel alignment out a bit. It doesn’t affect the handling, but it’s noticeable – and again, we’ve done the best part of a thousand miles since it happened.
I went in yesterday to get the wheel alignment checked – and it’s not that. No, I’ve knackered the rim of the wheel itself, and have to get a complete replacement wheel. It’s still OK to drive on, but yeah, it needs replacing.
So I’ve ordered one, and booked in for getting it replaced in a couple of weeks time, when the current contract comes to an end. It’s a pain, but well, it could be worse.
Still Talking
Posted: Fri 4 April, 2008 Filed under: Charm School, Cynicism, Driving 2 Comments »Driving to work yesterday, I spent half the journey in front of some cock who was talking into his mobile the entire way. I don’t normally want to see the police while I’m driving (not that I have a problem with them, but well – they’re never a happy sight) but damn I wanted to see one during that drive.
It amazes me still that people just think it’s OK to talk and drive. Personally, I aim to never use the phone – in fact I’ve only done so once, when the person called me back four times in a row without leaving a message, and that was when the road was straight, clear, and dual carriageway with no traffic coming the other way. I think the call lasted twenty seconds all told. Even then, it wasn’t OK to do, but was less distracting than the repeated calls.
All the same, fifteen-minute calls are taking the piss.
Suddenly Missing
Posted: Wed 2 April, 2008 Filed under: Driving, Weirdness 2 Comments »When driving, I’ve noticed there’s something I sometimes find quite distracting. It’s when a car suddenly disappears from the rear-view mirror.
It’s happened a few times recently – and OK, I suppose it’s better than having one suddenly disappearing from in front of you, at least. But it really is quite disconcerting to be driving along, knowing what’s in front and behind, then checking the mirror and it’s a completely different vehicle. Most bizarre – and distracting for a good couple of seconds, if nothing else.
Even worse (in my opinion) is when I’ve overtaken someone on a motorway or dual carriageway, then indicate to pull in and the car I’ve just overtaken has disappeared. That’s really distracting (particularly on motorways) and makes me wonder if the car’s in my blind-spot (which, on an estate car is pretty large) before I spot that they’ve also moved over to the first lane.
It’s just weird and distracting, that’s all.
