Dan Brown

For once in my life, I’m not going to go off on a rant about Dan Brown’s writing style and so on. I’ve done enough of that via Twitter to last me a while. (I may add some thoughts over the weekend, but I wouldn’t count on it)

Instead, I’m going to let The Telegraph point things out in a far better, pithier (and significantly less sweary) way by just pointing you to this article showing what they list as Brown’s Worst Twenty Sentences.

And it’s fair to say I really don’t want to read his new novel.

Neil Gaiman’s Bookshelves

This is just for reference, whenever Herself tells me I’ve got too many books…

At least I’m not Neil Gaiman – although I’m very envious of his bookshelves

Title Problem

Is it just me that thinks there’s a slight problem with the headline for this story about the funeral of the last person who’d been on the Titanic?

After all, if she’s still the last survivor, what’re they doing having a funeral for her?

The Next 30 Years

Charlie Stross is one of my favourite current sci-fi authors, and this post goes some way to explaining why.

It’s the text of his keynote speech for LOGIN 2009, a conference for online games developers, and the speech is about the changes he sees coming in gaming over the next thirty years.  He’s already written a novel based around some of these ideas (Halting State) and is currently writing the sequel to it, so I think it’s fair to say he’s done a fair amount of research and thinking about this subject already.

All told, it’s an interesting and entertaining read – and I’m sure it would’ve been even better to see him make the speech in person.

Low Interest

I know, a couple of quiet days here at D4D™ – for some reason my writing mojo has disappeared recently.

It’s annoying, because I’ve actually got a few things on my mind that could do with being splurged out onto paper (Hello, Google) or screen, just to get them out of my head. But the writing bug just isn’t there, so it’s all still just sat up there, taking up space and not doing much.

In other news, Hound was at the vets this morning – and most unimpressed about it – for some tests, including blood tests and shit tests. (Which has also meant Herself collecting bits of Hound shit in little plastic bottles over the weekend – we needed three days worth!) We’ll find out the results in about a week, but it’s another thing that’s been on the mind, for obvious reasons.

Ah well, I’m sure normal service will be resumed shortly.

Conference Conflicts

I’ve already written about being signed up for going to the World Horror Convention in Brighton at the end of March 2010 – which sounds like it’s going to be an interesting event.

However, there’s also the Odyssey 2010 EasterCon for SciFi stuff, which has a considerable appeal to me – except it’s only about a week after the WHC. Bugger.

At the moment I can’t decide between them – I’m more of a fan of SciFi writing than Horror (in general) although I’ve got enough of both genres to qualify on either count, I suspect.

So somewhere along the line, I’m going to have to make a decision – because somehow I can’t see Herself wearing it if I’m away for the best part of two weeks, one after the other…

Getting Expensive

It’s obviously about to be one of those times where life gets expensive again as things go wrong.

First, there’s the car. Still no word on what needs doing, how much it’ll cost, or when I’ll get it back.

Second, the laptop is definitely getting to be on it’s last legs. The bottom row of keys is getting very tempramental – who knew N was such a used key on my keyboard? – so I may have to go looking at a replacement at some point soon. Joy of joys.

In fairness, I’ve had the laptop for nearly three years, and in that time it’s had a hard life. It’s travelled in my backpack on a regular basis, gets used all the time at home, and is generally a bit of a workhorse. I cracked the case about 18 months ago, which makes CD/DVD use a bit of a challenge (and ejection of said disc even more so) but that wasn’t enough to need a change.

However, a broken/breaking keyboard is rather more relevant – I can’t use it properly if the keyboard’s on the way out. Typing is the main thing I do on the damn thing, in fact.

So I’ll give it a cleanout over the weekend, see if a hoover and/or air-blast will help, but I know it’s on the way out. I’m just prolonging the inevitable, really…
