Mileage – Part 3

I must be bloody potty…
Light Bed
Posted: Fri 8 May, 2009 Filed under: Depression, Domestic, Health, Technology 1 Comment »Recently, we’ve been trying out a weird alarm clock that also replicates the rising of the sun, so it’s “full daylight” when the alarm sounds. It doesn’t do much (if anything) for me, but Herself is finding it pretty useful for the way her body works.
And in related items, today I came across the LOMME bed which is pretty much the same concept writ large. The LOMME (Light Over Matter Mind Evolution) is a pod-bed, and has a built in light-box alarm as well as making use of other light colours etc.
It’s pretty cool – in a “What the fuck?” kind of way – but I’m pretty sure it would be massive overkill for us…
Meerkat / Dog

Houndless
Posted: Thu 7 May, 2009 Filed under: Animals, Domestic, Driving, Travel Leave a comment »This week, the house is remarkably quiet – primarily because Hound is down at her kennels/respite care place. It’s made sense, because of the work we did over the weekend, and the ongoing painting etc. that Herself’s been doing – but it still means the house is strangely quiet.
Of course it’s also lovely – it’s meant uninterrupted sleep at night, for example – and I’m sure that our neighbours are finding it equally odd/pleasant without Hound, and without inane/insane barking whenever we’re out in the garden, or going up to see the chickens, for example.
Psycho Cat is surprisingly unhappy about it too – he’s already attacked both of us for no good reason. He definitely misses Hound when she’s not around, much as he’d never admit it. (if the fuzzy bastard could talk, anyway) And when you take into account that he hates change too, it’s not surprising that he’s being a little grumpy fucker.
Of course, normality will resume on Saturday evening, once I’ve driven down to Wokingham, collected Hound, and driven back. (Another six hours on the road, and a 300ish mile round trip)
But for now, well, I’m just going to enjoy the peace for the next few days.
Geeky Tattoos
Posted: Wed 6 May, 2009 Filed under: 1BEM, Cynicism, Geeky, Weirdness 3 Comments »Really, you’ve just got to worry about some of the people shown on the Geeky Tattoos site.
I mean OK, I can understand (kind of) getting a tattoo of your favourite game characters or whatever – but the text of a 90s geeky meme that wasn’t funny at the time? Not the smartest of moves for later life, I’d suggest.
And as for a tattoo of Wolverine riding My Little Pony – let’s just leave it at “Oh. My. God.”, shall we?
Pink at the O2 – 1st May
Posted: Tue 5 May, 2009 Filed under: Music, Reviews(ish) 3 Comments »I’ve seen Pink in concert before – but it was many moons ago, back at the Manchester Apollo. In fact, having checked back, it was pre-D4D that I went, which gives a fine range on how long ago it was.
Anyway, at that point it was small venue and her first tour in the UK. She was fantastic then, but the stage was pretty minimal.
What a contrast to this tour. The Funhouse tour is – to say the least – spectacular, and a world away from that first tour. Right from the start, as Pink comes out of a magic box, you know it’s going to be something special.
I won’t give away the surprises in the show – suffice it say there’s a couple of superb covers of tracks I honestly never thought I’d say that about – but it’s a spectacular in every sense of the word. The really impressive part is where Pink also goes up on a trapeze – while singing “Sober” – and does so perfectly, even while doing the drops etc. It’s a truly impressive sight.
In fact, the entire show is stunning, from the lights to the multi-video-screen backdrop, the runway out into the audience, the trapeze and ropework, the entire stage set – it’s just stunning.
Well worth going to see if you get the chance.
Sanding / No connection
Posted: Tue 5 May, 2009 Filed under: Domestic, Getting Organised, House Work Leave a comment »Yesterday was spent with absolutely no internet connection at home. For once this was a choice thing, rather than some esoteric Bank Holiday Fuckup by BT, Tiscali or anyone else.
Basically, the main phone point is in the hallway, and over the weekend the hallway got cleared out so we could sand/seal/varnish the teak parquet floor.
Yes, Herself was back trusting me with power tools. Go figure.
So yesterday was the day the actual sanding took place. And all went amazingly well.
The floor was (it turned out) amazingly dirty – the parquet looked more like mahogany than teak. Then the industrial floor sanders came out, and now it’s all teaky and beautiful again. I’m not perfect with the sanders, but the job has come up looking fantastic.
It’s all been sealed/varnished again as well, using Ronseal’s “Diamond Hard” clear floor varnish – a product which certainly lives up to it’s description, but also makes the floor look even better.
There’s a couple more marks/dents/lines in the floor than there used to be, but they’re not horrendous – I’m sure we’ll stop noticing them soon. I bloody hope so anyway, because it’s now going to be a complete bastard to go back down through the new varnish if we did decide to sand them out completely.
But it’s all done now. There’s a lot more work to be done in the hallway – woodwork and walls to be (re)painted etc., and so on, but the final big job in the house is now complete.
