Travelling Man

This month has started with a trip up to Manchester, visiting a work client. It’s been fun, even with having to use the piece-of-shit hire car to get to and from there.

Next week I’m down in Devon, so it’s all a bit mileage heavy.

No idea yet what the rest of the month will bring, but all the same, it’ll also give me chance to shake down the new car once I’ve got that tomorrow.

January Progress

Back at the end of 2012, I said I’d got two main plans for this year,

  1. Weigh less
  2. Write more

So, one month in, where do we stand?

On Point One, I’ve lost half a stone.  Obviously that’s not insignificant, but there’s a long way to go still.

As part of it, I’ve been keeping a food diary for the last month, which has been interesting. It’s allowed me to keep track of what I’m eating and illustrate any bad foods (or even bad days) although it’s shown more that the intake side is lower than it should be. (I’m averaging about 1600 a day, from current evidence)

As I’ve written before, I’ve also had the health MOT this month : blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid, blood sugar, the lot. It’s all come through OK, so that’s another thing.

And, of course, I’ve cut down my intake of Diet Coke significantly. It’s still got a small way to go if I’m to cut it out completely, but it’s still massively reduced from where it was.

Now it’s a case of upping the exercise levels as part of that project point.

For Point Two, I’ve managed to do some writing, although not as much as I’d hoped. I’ve got a short story mostly done, which I want to get completed in the next few days. I’ve also been writing a new idea, and that’s currently about a fifth of the way through it. Again, it’s something I’m working on, and it’s already better than it was last year, but there’s a long way to go.

Still though, it’s been a good start to the year.

Death of a Mondeo

Just under six years ago, I bought my first car, the Mondeo estate. (It’s actually annoying in an OCD way that it’s so close to six years – it’s five years, ten months, two weeks)

Two weeks ago, it crapped itself on the M1, diagnostics pointing to a fault on the Fuel Injection pump – which it turned out had pretty much exploded. That’s pretty serious, lots of money, and probably more than the car’s worth.

I’ve had to hire a replacement car in the meantime, which is a Renault Megane, and a more gutless piece of shit you couldn’t hope to find. In my opinion it’s actually dangerously underpowered, making overtaking manoeuvres into a really un-fun situation.  I hate it, it’s a bucket of crap.

Anyway, I’ve now put the Mondeo onto eBay (as spares/repair – it’s been a good car up til now, but the costs outweigh keeping it) and I’ve started the process for buying a new car. Well, new to me – definitely not new!

On that one, more when I collect it (Wednesday) and know that everything’s good.

The Mondeo’s done me well for the last six years, during which I’ve put 130,000 miles on it. I hope the new one serves as well.

Anniversal (One)

[This is the first of a number of one-year-on thoughts that are running through this year. Live with it]

I only just realised, I’ve now been in my current job – well, working with my current company – for a year. (A year last Friday, to be exact)

Of course, within that year I’ve started off as a contractor, then been paid as a direct contractor, and then taken on full-time, so it’s kind of been three jobs all told, but all with the same place.

It’s quite surprising really – that time has flown by, I’m still enjoying the work and the new challenges, so I’ll stick it out for a while longer.  The plan is to be there ’til at least August, and probably for this year, but we’ll see how things go.

Weird Marketing

The other day, I got the strangest marketing email in a long while.

It’s from Apple, which probably explains a lot, but still, you’ve got to wonder when it comes to a subject/tag-line like this…

iPad or iPad mini. The perfect choice for Valentine’s Day.

I just can’t compute how that even works .

The additional image didn’t help explain, either.

Apple valentine's Ad

What. The. Fuck?
