The Thermal Properties of Coke

In the UK, we’re in the middle of a heatwave.  Other countries would absolutely laugh at how crap we are at dealing with heat (and in their eyes, it’s “only” 30° C, after all) but for the UK it’s more than enough. As with snow, we’re a nation of mid-range and changeable weather, so we’ve never had any need to invest in infrastructure to deal with more ‘extreme’ (and again, that’s in the context of our weather, not other places in the world!) temperatures. We generally don’t have air-conditioning in houses and offices by default, nor the stuff for dealing with snow, winds, rain or anything.

Anyway, for us, it’s hot.  And every time it’s hot like this, I’m reminded that Cola (whether diet or full-fat) is a strange, strange beast.

Obviously Cola is best drunk cold – as cold as possible. But it’s crap at staying cold.  Leave it for ten to fifteen minutes and it’ll be warm.

On the other end of the scale, leave it in a car to get hot, and it’ll stay hot for hours.  The full-fat sugary one is the worst for it, but even the diet ones do this, so I don’t think it’s a facet of the sugar content.

There’s no real point to this – I just find it interesting that it’s a liquid/substance whose thermal properties are different according to whether it’s hot or cold.

Yes, I need to get out more.

Sporty

Fuck’s sake.

So not only do we have World Cup kickyball, cricket and rugby gubbins going on, but as of today we’ve got Wimble-bloody-don as well?!?

I give up.

Lead Developer 2018

This week I was in London during the week, attending the 2018 Lead Developer conference.  I’ve been before, both in 2016 and 2017 (so I’ve only missed the first one, back in 2015) and this year was as good as the previous ones. It’s gone from size to size, and this year had 1,100 delegates – which also meant that it’s outgrown the QEII centre, so this time we were at the theatre in the Barbican centre instead.

I had decided this year that I couldn’t be arsed with frantic travelling, so instead went down to London on Tuesday afternoon, checked into a hotel in Islington (so I had plenty of opportunity to keep up with walking and so on as well) and stayed for two nights.  On the Tuesday I also darkened the doors of Mac and Wild, where I had a truly ridiculous (and rather excellent) off-menu burger. Following the first day of the conference I also walked to Mere (again – and I hadn’t remembered I’d done much the same thing last year until I re-read the post from then) and back.

On the Thursday, once the conference was done, I walked up to where I’d parked the car, and had dinner in Wahaca up there before driving home.  This had been planned, as it meant I left London just at the time that England started their kickyball match in the World Cup, which meant that the roads were comparatively much quieter than usual, and that the drive home was pretty easy.

Along the way, I’ve also been able to complete a full working week, allbeit crammed into three days rather than five. It’s been pretty tough, but at least it’s all done now.

After this weekend, things calm down a lot – and I honestly can’t wait.

Hamilton

Last Friday, I went to see the musical Hamilton in London, and loved it.  I knew very little about it beforehand – my preferred way of going to plays and so on – and found it thoroughly enjoyable.  It’s incredibly fast, and a lot of the lyrics failed to stick in my head, so I also ordered the original Broadway cast recording/soundtrack.

I listened to the entire thing while driving to and from London this week (each disc was just the same length as the drive, by happy coincidence) and some of the tunes and lyrics have then lasted all week as well.

I’m aiming to go and see Hamilton again, probably at the end of the year, and in the meantime I’m pretty sure I’m going to have listened to the soundtrack a lot in the meantime.

Half past 2018

Somehow, we’re nearly halfway through 2018 already. It’s been a hugely busy and eventful six months, but right now I’m hoping for a bit of a break.  (Yeah, we’ve heard it all before, I know)

At the moment, I’ve got very little scheduled in for July and August – and while I’ll still be going out and about, my current plan is to not be as hyper, at least.

There’s other things in the plan instead, which I’ll write more about as and when I get the chance (and as and when they start working out)

There’s another week of being chaotically busy to get through first, but the end is in sight, and that’s a good thing right now.

Solsticial

So that’s it, the longest day of the year is over.

And from here the nights start to draw in again…

Time To Spare

I’ve written before about my tendency to be horrifically early for things – I like having time to spare, and I’m happy with being where I’m supposed to be, with a book, phone etc., and can happily while away the time.

It also, on occasion, gives me time to sort things out when I’ve sodded them up – which was the case on Sunday.

The car’s air-conditioning has been noticeably weaker this summer, so I’d decided to have it re-gassed, and see if that made a difference. I booked an appointment with Kwik-Fit to get it done on Sunday morning, and turned up (early) to where I thought I had it booked in.

Only… it wasn’t booked in there.  Knackers.  I couldn’t find the confirmation email (still no idea what happened to that) so ended up having to call their main customer centre to try and find out.  Turned out – either through my own stupidity, or some kind of system glitch – that it was actually booked on the other side of town from where I was. Knackers again.

But because I’d been horrendously early, it meant I still had the time to get across to the correct place in time for my appointment – and even had time to spare!

It all worked out fine in the end – but if I’d been punctual for the first one, I’d have been utterly kippered for getting to the proper place on time!
